New Haven Splits Doubleheader With Quebec

Quebec City, Quebec- The New Haven County Cutters and Quebec Les Capitales split a pair of seven inning games on Wednesday night with the Cutters taking the first game 5-2 and the Capitales winning the second 3-2 to earn a split of the doubleheader.

In Game one, the Cutters took the early lead by manufacturing a run off Quebec starter Lance Franks. Ryan Kane's lead off single was followed by a Kevin Forbes walk that put runners on first and second with nobody out. After a sacrifice bunt by Tyrone Pendergrass advanced the runners to second and third, Kane scored on a sacrifice fly by P.J. Johnston, giving the Cutters a 1-0 lead.

The Cutters used the long ball to extend their lead in the top of the third inning as Jimmy Hurst hit a solo home run giving New Haven a 2-0 lead. The homer was Hurst's second of the series and sixth of the season giving him the new team lead in that category.

Catcher Adam Shorsher added a RBI single in the top of the fifth, scoring Hector Lebron and extending the lead to 3-0.

The Capitales drew to within one in the sixth on Shane Hopper¡¯s two run homer off Ryan Bonesio, trimming the New Haven lead to 3-2.

The Cutters would add two insurance runs in the top of the seventh off Quebec reliever Mike Hoyt on a RBI groundout by Ryan Kane and a RBI single off the bat of Kevin Forbes.

Shane Waroff pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up his seventh save of the season and preserve the win for Ryan Bonesio (2-2) who went six solid innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out five. Lance Franks took the loss to fall to 0-3 on the year.

In Game two, right-handed reliever Wes Mindingall made his first start as a Cutter and went a season high 4 and 1/3 innings allowing just a fifth inning solo homer by second basemen Sam Bozanich that gave Quebec a 1-0 lead.

In the top off the sixth, the Cutters finally broke through against Capitales starter Jess Turner. After Tyrone Pendergrass singled, P.J. Johnston doubled high off the left field wall putting runners on first and second with one out. Turner then was lifted for reliever Ben Grezlovski who gave up a RBI ground out to Jose Mateo that tied the game at one. Billy Rich then followed with a RBI single up the middle that scored Johnston and gave the Cutters a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, Quebec tied the game at two on a RBI sacrifice fly by Eddie Lantigua that scored Benoit Emond. Two batters later, with the bases loaded, Steve Booker was hit by a Chris Keelin pitch forcing in a run and giving the Capitales a 3-2 lead. Booker was the third batter Keelin hit in the inning and the fourth Quebec batter struck by a pitch in the inning.

Capitales closer Alex Santos came in to strike out the side in the bottom of the seventh to pick up his fourth save of the season. Reliever Ben Grezlovski (3-0) earns the win; Lefty A.J. Brack (2-1) took the loss.

The Cutters will enjoy an off day on Thursday before continuing their road trip on Friday night when they open up a three-game set with the New Jersey Jackals. New Haven returns home on Monday, July 5th with a three-game series against the Bangor Lumberjacks.
