Brockton's Averette sold to Baltimore Orioles

June 30, 2004 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release

Durham, N.C. -- Brockton's Robert Averette became the third Northeast League player sold this season when the Baltimore Orioles purchased him and sent him to Bowie, Md., the team's Double-A affiliate. Earlier this season, Quebec's Jeff Harris and Paul Abraham were sold to Seattle and San Diego, respectively. The NEL has now had 24 former players appear on an affiliated team's roster this season.

Averette was 3-1 with a 1.88 earned run average, which ranked third in the league, for the Rox. In 43 innings of work, he has allowed 40 hits and struck out 31, while walking only four. Averette is in his first season with Brockton after being acquired from Shreveport of the Central Baseball League in the off-season. With the Sports, he went 13-4 with a 2.42 ERA to earn Right-handed Pitcher of the Year honors.

Averette, 27, is in his eighth season of professional baseball. He was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 21st round of the 1997 draft. The Reds traded him to the Colorado Rockies for outfielder Brian L. Hunter, Aug. 6, 2000. He reached the Triple A level for both the Reds and Rockies organizations.
