Toronto Argonauts News Release
Mississauga - The Toronto Argonauts Football Club is pleased to announce that veteran offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Bill Diedrick has joined the club as Offensive Assistant coach.
Commented Diedrick, "First of all, I'm very excited to have the opportunity to join the Argos. It is a wonderful organization, full of history and tradition. I am excited for the season ahead, particularly with the Grey Cup coming to Toronto. Secondly, just being able to stay associated with Steve on the offensive side and being able to work with Rich (Stubler) again is very thrilling to me".
Diedrick will work alongside new Offensive Coordinator and longtime colleague Steve Buratto. The two worked together in Calgary when Diedrick served as a quarterbacks and receivers coach in 2005 and 2006. Together, the two helped mould the Calgary Stampeders into one of the CFL's most explosive offences.
Buratto remarked, "Bill brings a tremendous amount to our offensive plans. He has been an offensive coordinator at Division 1 schools and with the Eskimos. He is a skilled quarterbacks and receivers coach. He is an educator and is able to communicate very well with players to get them to do what we need them to do. He was an integral part of the success we had in Calgary and I'm very thrilled he has decided to join me in Toronto".
Diedrick brings a wealth of knowledge to the Argo offence as a whole. His ability to groom and work with quarterbacks and receivers makes him a perfect fit in Buratto's scheme.
"Bill will primarily be responsible for the pass offence," Buratto said. "I'll be more focused on protections and run game; he on throwing the football. He has the knowledge and skill necessary to coach a winning offence. We will work together on all aspects of the offence and on game plans."
Toronto will be Diedrick's third CFL stop after helping lead the Edmonton Eskimo offence from 1991-1992 before his stop in Calgary. Prior to joining Calgary, Diedrick spent three years (2002-2004) at the University of Notre Dame, where he produced 1,000 yard rushers in each of his first two seasons. In 2003, he helped in the growth and emergence of quarterback Brady Quinn and current Dallas Cowboys running back Julius Jones. His time at Notre Dame ended a four year stint as an offensive coordinator with Stanford which produced the Pac-10 offensive Player of the Year in receiver Troy Walters.
The Toronto Argonauts are North America's oldest professional football club, celebrating their 134th anniversary in 2007.
