North Carolina Courage News Release
CARY, N.C. - The North Carolina Courage have re-signed veteran midfielder Meredith Speck to a two-year, guaranteed contract through the 2024 season. The Yale University product has spent her entire pro career with the organization since joining the then-New York Flash in 2016.
Speck appeared in 19 matches and started nine in 2022, logging over 900 minutes in the regular season. She scored a goal and dished a pair of assists on the season while holding a 77.3% passing accuracy. Defensively, she had seven clearances, a block and nine interceptions while winning 46.4% of duels.
"Bringing back Meri was important to us as a club. She is someone who embodies what it means to be a Courage player: tireless work rate, positive attitude, growth mindset, and always willing to do whatever the team needs. She had one of her best years as a pro last season, stepping up in critical moments for our team, and will continue to develop. We are excited to have her back," said head coach Sean Nahas.
Speck became the first Yale Eli to join the NWSL when she signed with the Flash in 2016, starting five of the six matches she appeared in throughout her first professional season. Overall, she's appeared in 70 regular season matches, starting 26, and scored three goals with four assists. She's also appeared in 14 Challenge Cup matches, including eight during the 2022 title for the Courage.
The Courage roster now stands at 18 players, including eight midfielders: Malia Berkely, Tess Boade (on loan until February), Millie Farrow, Emily Gray, Fuka Nagano, Denise O'Sullivan, Speck, and Frankie Tagliaferri.
