WICHITA, KS - The National Baseball Congress (NBC), in conjunction with the City of Wichita, announced several major changes to the NBC World Series at a press conference on Thursday afternoon.

The changes are effective immediately and will be applied to this year's tournament. The NBC World Series celebrates its 79th edition starting Friday, July 26th.

"The NBC World Series is an iconic baseball tournament," said City of Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer. "It's a community asset that supports tourism, promotes our city, and enhances the core area. It's our hope that it's future will be as lengthy and bright as its past, which includes a loyal fan base, memorable games, and legendary players such as Ozzie Smith, Albert Pujols, Tom Seaver, and Satchel Paige. The changes to the tournament are designed to sustain the NBC tradition and ensure the tournament remains in its rightful home."

The tournament has been divided into two one-week periods that will be played consecutively from July 26th through August 10th. The top two teams from the first week advance to a 16-team "Championship Week". The remainder of the Championship Week bracket is comprised of the champions from the 10 most successful leagues over the tournament's last 10 years, two at-large clubs determined by NBC officials, and the previous summer's national champion and runner-up. Both weeks follow a double-elimination format.

"We considered many things when coming up with the new format," said Tournament Director Casey Walkup. "We wanted to accommodate the many wishes of local teams, traveling teams, fans, and the tournament's history and tradition. Our number one goal is to get the NBC World Series back on the right track. We hope this format will allow us to seek more affiliates outside of our geographic locations, which in turn, will increase the quality and presence of our great tournament."

The overall compensation pool has been increased from $62,200 to $65,300, including a $1,000 raise for both the national champion and runner-up. Additionally, the two teams advancing to Championship Week from the first week will earn $5,000 each.

Ticket prices for all sessions will be lowered, while the number of "Buy-Out" Nights-which provide fans free general admission vouchers to specific tournament dates-will cover both weeks of the new format.
