January 13, 2012 - NBA G League (G League) News Release
IN (SHOW) CASE YOU MISSED IT
Play wrapped up at the 2012 NBA Development League Showcase yesterday. Here's a quick snapshot of the final day. Be sure to log on to NBADLeague.com for complete coverage, including game recaps, features, blog, prospect reports, and more.
Justin Dentmon is the picture that comes with the Austin Toros wallet, but there are plenty of other useful compartments. These were on display Thursday, as the Toros (14-3) saw six players score in double figures, led by 27 points from Dentmon, in a 108-94 win over the Dakota Wizards on the final day of the 2012 NBA D-League Showcase. Dentmon, the NBA D-League's third-leading scorer (23.4 ppg), shot 8-for-14 from the field and 11-for-12 from the free throw line as the Toros, who trailed 56-55 at the half, took control the rest of the way. Not drafted in 2009 out of Washington, Dentmon is one of many undersized scoring guards in the NBA D-League trying to convince NBA teams he can play the point. More
The conditions were slick on Route 66. Tulsa went pedal to the metal, scoring 16 fast-break points while building a 26-point lead at the half, then cruising to a 111-92 win over Fort Wayne at the 2012 NBA D-League Showcase. Marcus Lewis scored 23 points on 11-for-12 shooting, to go with 12 rebounds. Larry Owens added 19 points and seven rebounds for the 66ers, who shot 54 percent for the game. While many players come to the Showcase looking to display a new wrinkle to their game, be it a scoring guard trying to run the point, or a power forward drifting from the low blocks to show off improved range, Lewis and Owens know who they are. The majority of Lewis' shots came from point-blank range, as he established position and converted near the basket. It's no surprise Lewis leads the NBA D-League in rebounding (13.9 rpg) given where he likes to set up shop. More
Marcus Morris finished his assignment early, though there was no extra credit to be had. Not quite two minutes into the first quarter of Rio Grande Valley's matchup with Springfield, Morris, on assignment from the Houston Rockets, came down awkwardly after shooting a jumper. He limped off the floor with what appeared to be a sprained ankle. Tough break for a player Houston selected with the 14th overall pick of the 2011 NBA Draft, and was hoping would get valuable playing experience at the 2012 NBA D-League Showcase. Springfield (9-9) took advantage, building an 11-point lead at the half, before falling behind late in the fourth quarter and needing a Preston Knowles three-pointer with 5.6 seconds left to post a 100-99 win at the 2012 NBA D-League Showcase. Hamady N'Diaye is already in the show. Manny Harris is trying to get back to the show. Curtis Stinson has never been to the show. Different players. Similar dreams. Converging storylines. Oh, and some terrific games, too. So went the tale of the 2012 NBA D-League Showcase, which concluded last night with the Iowa Energy and the Canton Charge trading baskets late in the fourth quarter, before Stinson hit three clutch free throws to give the Energy a 102-97 victory, its first with Stinson back in the lineup. Mike Efevberha led the Energy (13-5) with 20 points. Marqus Blakely had a terrific all-around game for Iowa, finishing with 13 points, five rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks. More
2112 NBA D-LEAGUE ALL-STAR BALLOTING PRESENTED BY 2K SPORTS TIPS OFF
Balloting for the 2012 NBA D-League All-Stars tipped off this week. The NBA D-League All-Star Game will take place Feb. 25 in Orlando at the Orange County Convention Center.
PROSPECT REPORT
Manny Harris, Canton Charge -- Not drafted in 2011, Harris spent his entire rookie season with the Cleveland Cavaliers last year, appearing in 54 games and averaging 5.9 points and 2.6 rebounds. Most figured he was in Cleveland's future plans. That changed in November, when Harris suffered freezer burn after using the cooling chamber at Nike's facilities in Oregon. He was unable to receive treatment from team doctors because of the NBA lockout. The healing process reportedly didn't go according to plan, and Harris was eventually cut by the Cavaliers without having the chance to compete for a spot. He signed with Canton, which is owned and operated by the Cavaliers. Harris is an athletic and versatile two guard, who's more slasher than shooter at this stage of his career. He's also a solid defender. The buzz coming out of the Showcase was that Harris would be back in the NBA this season.
