Lancaster Stormers News Release
Ray Navarrete went 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBI as the Long Island Ducks defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers, 4-1, Sunday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
The game was delayed over two hours by rain before getting underway.
Robert Sandora led off the third inning with a walk from Josh Hall (5-2), and Navarrete followed with a homer into the net in right center field, giving the Ducks a 2-1 lead.
Navarrete also picked up an RBI in the fifth inning. Dennis Donovan led off the frame with a single to center. Sandora hit a ground ball to third baseman Lloyd Turner, which was mishandled on an in-between hop for one of Lancaster's four errors on the night. Navarrete followed with a ground single through the hole on the left side for a 3-1 lead.
Long Island's final run scored in the top of the sixth. Edgardo Alfonzo doubled into the left field corner with one out in the inning. Damian Rolls singled to center, and Alfonzo scored with the ball eluded center fielder Jutt Hileman for an error.
Hall finished eight innings. He allowed nine hits while walking two and striking out two. Only two of the four runs scored by the Ducks were earned.
Lancaster managed only five singles off a trio of Ducks right-handers. The Barnstormers scored their only run in the second off Clint Nageotte (1-3) when Turner was hit by a pitch and raced home from first when a fly ball to left center by Kevin Kotch was dropped by Jay Gibbons for an error.
Trailing, 2-1, in the fourth, the Barnstormers loaded the bases. Manny Mejia started the inning with a walk and advanced to second when Luis Perez was hit by a pitch. Hileman flied to left after fouling off two bunt attempts. Lloyd Turner singled off the right field wall loading the sacks, but Kotch struck out swinging and Juan Francia flied to center on a 2-0 offering from Nageotte.
Lancaster did not advance another runner beyond first base. Todd Williams worked two scoreless innings, giving up a pair of singles, and Joe Valentine worked the final two for his 10th save.
