Northwest Arkansas Naturals News Release
Springdale, AR- The rain earlier in the day saved the Naturals from facing Rangers pitcher Kevin Millwood, on a rehab with Frisco. After Blake Wood was able to keep the RoughRiders at bay for nearly six innings, mother nature took care of the rest, as drenching rains swooped in, leading to the game being called with two outs in the top of the sixth. Naturals' second baseman Marc Maddox two-run go-ahead homerun provided the offensive fuel Wood and the Naturals needed as they took the opener by the count of 4-0 on Saturday night in front of a crowd of 5,030 fans at Arvest Ballpark. With the win, Northwest Arkansas has now won seventeen of their last twenty games at home.
The Naturals (30-18, 63-55) got on the board early in the third inning. Marc Maddox (2-for-3) hit a two-run homerun to give the Naturals the lead with rain threatening in the balance. The Naturals were able to add some insurance runs in fifth as Irving Falu's 2-run single which gave the Naturals a 4-0 cushion.
On the hill for the Naturals' was right hander Blake Wood (4-6), who turned in a stellar pitching performance, picking up his first victory since July 13th. He threw all 5 2/3 innings of shutout baseball, giving up only two hits, while fanning five batters and allowing three walks.
Frisco's Jared Hyatt (2-1) was on the mound in place of Millwood who was scheduled to make a rehabilitation appearance but was scratched before the game due to weather. He suffered the defeat, going five innings, giving up four runs (three of which were earned) on eight hits, while striking out three and walking two batters.
The RoughRiders (29-19, 72-46) couldn't get their offense going before the game was called. They only managed two hits on the night, stranding four baserunners.
The Naturals will play game two of their three game series against these same Frisco Roughriders on Sunday afternoon. Sunday, August 10th is Family Sunday presented by Nickelodeon and Viacom Consumer Products and Magic 107.9. SPONGE BOB SQUARE PANTS will be on hand to visit with fans. Game time is 4 P.M (gates open at 3), and kids run the bases after the game! Before the game, Magic 107.9 will broadcast live.
