Frederick Keys News Release
Woodbridge, Va. -The Potomac Nationals scored three times in the fifth inning, while Lucas Giolito limited the Frederick Keys to one run in 6.1 innings as the P-Nats earned a 4-1 victory on Friday night at Pftizner Stadium. It was Frederick's sixth straight road loss, while it moved the club's first-half elimination number to five. In Salem, the Blue Rocks suffered a 4-2 setback, meaning the Keys remain five games out of first with nine games remaining before the All-Star break.
Potomac squandered chances with runners in scoring position in the third and fourth, but capitalized in the fifth against Keys starter Mitch Horacek. Estarlin Martinez opened the inning with a double and moved to third on bunt by Christopher Bostick. Narciso Mesa then coaxed a walk to put runners at the corners for John Wooten. After a number of pickoff throws by Horacek (4-6) over to first, Mesa stole second successfully, while the throw of Chance Sisco sailed high, allowing Martinez to score.
From there Horacek threw a wild pitch to advance Mesa to third, before Wooten singled his teammate home after an extended at-bat. Wooten moved to third on a steal and a flyball by Spencer Kieboom, before coming home on a triple by Stephen Perez.
Horacek would exit after the three-bagger. Working just 4.2 innings, the former Dartmouth product allowed three runs on five hits. He walked four and struck out three. Frederick scored its lone run in the third off Giolito (2-4) thanks to three straight singles. With one out, Johnny Ruettiger started things off with a base hit, while single baggers by Josh Hart and Jeff Kemp made it 1-0 Keys. Ruettiger led the Keys offense going 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Hart finished 2-for-5 with a double, his third multi-hit effort in four games.
Giolito allowed eight hits, but earned his second win allowing just one run. He walked one and struck out five.
Nick Lee stranded two inherited runners in the seventh and tossed a clean eighth, setting up Manny Rodriguez to close things out in the ninth. The right-hander would strike out the first two Keys, but a single by Ruettiger and an error by Perez at short kept things alive for Kemp. The Keys two-hole batter would hit a ball well to center, but Mesa made the catch to end the game. The Keys and the Nationals play the middle of three games on Saturday night. Mikey O'Brien (0-0, --) makes his Frederick debut and will be opposed by P-Nats right-hander John Simms 3-4, 3.80). First pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m. and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source and frederickkeys.com. The Keys return home on Monday night at 7:00 p.m when the Carolina Mudcats come to town. It is Volt Night at the ballpark, as world-renowned chef, Bryan Voltaggio will operate a concession stand and offer his own unique taste on ballpark cuisine. Voltaggio will also be autographing copies of his new book HOME, while the first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a Volt foam finger.
