Nationals swept by Pelicans
June 4, 2006 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Potomac Nationals News Release
Woodbridge, Va. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans seem to enjoy playing in two parks in the Carolina League. Their own and Pfitzner Stadium as the Pelicans completed a four-game sweep of the Nationals with a 5-2 victory on Sunday afternoon.
The Pelicans were led by a steady attack of offense and pitching as Carl Loadenthal delivered the big blow in the ninth with a two-run home run as well as scoring the eventual game-winning run in the seventh.
Myrtle Beach is now a combined 23-11 at the two parks and 5-17 in the other six Carolina League cities. Half of the Pelicans road wins have come at Pfitzner Stadium.
The Nats offense held close until the ninth but struck first in the third inning when Reggie Fitzpatrick led off with a double to right. He would score when Ender Chavez laid down a bunt that was fielded by Steve Pyzik who hit Chavez with the throw. The ball bounded away and allowed Fitzpatrick to scamper home with the game's first run.
The Pelicans scored a pair of runs in the fourth on an RBI single by Van Pope and RBI ground out by Pyzik.
Potomac tied the game in the fifth when an RBI ground out by Rog Bernadina. The game remained tied until the seventh when Robert Marcial put down a suicide squeeze to score Loadenthal.
Mike Hinckley struck out three in six innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits. Juan Ovalles was on the mound in the seventh when the Pelicans took the lead for good and had his third loss of the season laid upon his stats. Alex Morales pitched the ninth.
