August 17, 2023 - Southern League (SL)
Birmingham Barons News Release

Over the 2023 season the Birmingham Barons have accumulated an overall record of 19-44 with their starting pitchers, which is last in the Southern League. The Barons graciously took in the starting pitching help that the Chicago White Sox sought after at the MLB Trade Deadline. Among the pitching acquired was RHP Nick Nastrini, who in Game 2 against the Chattanooga Lookouts was stellar from the mound.

Nastrini in just his third start with the Barons pitched 6.0 innings and tossed a career-high in strikeouts with 10. The right-hander allowed six hits, one walk and the one earned run the Lookouts were able to achieve on the night.

The 23-year-old kicked off his dominance right from the jump as Nastrini kept Chattanooga off the scoreboard for the first 2.2 innings. The Lookouts cashed in their first run of the night off an Alex McGarry single that scored Jacob Hurtubise. Even with the Lookouts grabbing their first run of the night, the Barons had grabbed the lead in the bottom of the second inning.

Birmingham got their offense going in the third inning with Wilfred Veras leading the way with a single. Veras' single extended his hit streak to five consecutive games, and nine out of the last 11. After an Edgar Quero walk, Luis Mieses came up to the plate with two-on and brought all of them home. Mieses mashed his eighth home run of the season on a three-run homer that gave the Barons the early lead. Mieses finished the night 3-4 with two runs, four RBI and a home run.

After Chattanooga scored their lone run in the top of the third, it was all Birmingham for the rest of the night. Nastrini continued his dominance for three more innings as he finished the night at the conclusion of the sixth.

The Barons offense sent Nastrini off the mound with a gift of two more runs in the bottom of the sixth frame. Birmingham collected their runs in the form of a Mieses blooper that scored Veras and a wild pitch that scored Quero from third. The Barons extended their lead, nevertheless, Quero on a single also extended his on-base and hit streak to 14 and 13, respectively.

At the top of the seventh, Birmingham tossed LHP Garrett Schoenle on the bump to relieve Nastrini. In his 1.0 innings pitched, Schoenle managed a three-up three-down innings with three strikeouts. The Barons at the closure of the top of the seventh had struck out nine of their last 10 batters.

LHP Fraser Ellard relieved Schoenle at the top of the eighth and continued the Barons dominance on the mound. Ellard finished off his lone inning of work with two strikeouts and sat down Chattanooga in order.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Barons put an exclamation point on their night by scoring five runs and getting to double digits on the scoreboard. Birmingham scored their runs on a wild pitch that scored Mieses, a balk with the bases loaded that scored Alsander Womack, a single by Bryan Ramos that scored Moises Castillo and Terrell Tatum and finally a double by Veras that scored Ramos. Among the runs scored Veras' double was his third consecutive game with a two-bagger and his fifth in as many games.

To finish off the game, the Barons handed the mound over to LHP Gil Luna for the final three outs. Luna accomplished those outs in three batters with a ground out, and two pop outs, respectively.

Birmingham now turns their efforts to Game 3 as they try to keep the winning vibes going. The Barons plan on giving the start to the Chicago White Sox No. 13 prospect, RHP Jonathan Cannon, for his sixth start for the Magic City.
