Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV - The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, are teaming up with NASCAR race car driver Garrett Smithley during Saturday's Mid-Ohio Challenge.
Smithley, 26, is a native of Ligonier, Pennsylvania, and is a big fan of all three teams in the Pittsburgh Penguins organization. In March, Garrett brought his #NumberNuthin car to WesBanco Arena, and the Nailers drove their way to victory lane with a 4-3 win over the Brampton Beast. This is the second straight season in which Smithley and the Nailers have teamed together on the race track.
"I'm really excited to have the Wheeling Nailers back on my Xfinity car," Smithley said. "We had such a fun event a few months ago at their game and hope we get a chance to do it again in the future. Crossover between different sports is really important and I have to give a shout to Billy and the whole Nailers team for picking me to support!"
Thus far this season, Smithley has appeared in 20 NASCAR Xfinity Series races, finishing in the top-five once and the top-ten twice. His top-five finish came in the first race of the season at Daytona International Speedway. This weekend, Garrett will also be appearing in his third race of the season in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, taking place on Sunday in Brooklyn, Michigan.
"The Wheeling Nailers are excited to ride along with Garrett Smithley and JD Motorsports this weekend, as they chase the checkered flag at the Mid-Ohio Challenge," said Nailers Alternate Governor Brian Komorowski. "We saw Garrett's passion for hockey and the Nailers this season when he brought his car to our game, and we are happy to support him in a race so close to our city. We wish Garrett and his team the best of luck on Saturday, and we look forward to seeing our logo race around the track on his car."
Saturday's Mid-Ohio Challenge takes place at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, beginning at 3:00, and can be seen on NBCSN. Garrett Smithley races for JD Motorsports with Gary Keller. Look for the Nailers logo on the side of his number zero car.
