Nailers Re-Sign Forward Chase Watson

Wheeling, WV - The Wheeling Nailers, the proud ECHL affiliate of the Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins and the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, have announced the signing of forward Chase Watson.

The native of Media, Pennsylvania (near Philadelphia) and product of Providence College played in 5 regular season games and all 7 playoff games with the Nailers last year after signing with the team late in the season. This will be Watson's 2nd season with the Nailers and 3rd in the ECHL.

"We expect Chase to be a large contributor to the success of our team this year" Nailers head coach Greg Puhalski said.

Chase Watson has good hockey blood-lines. He is the son of former Philadelphia Flyer Jim Watson and nephew of Joe Watson. Jim Watson played in 613 games in the NHL from 1972-82 all with Philadelphia. Joe Watson played in 835 NHL games from 1965-79 mostly with Philadelphia but also had stays with Boston and Colorado.

Last year, Chase Watson began the season with the Augusta Lynx and played 16 games for them recording 8 assists. When the Lynx folded early in the 2008-09 campaign he took the opportunity to tend to an injury. When he was ready to return to the ice Puhalski grabbed the 26 year old for the Nailers' push for the playoffs.

Watson is 6'0" and 185 pounds. He scored 14 goals and had 16 assists with Augusta in his rookie professional season in 2007-08. He played four seasons for the Providence College Friars in the Hockey East including finishing second on the team in scoring his junior season in 2005-06 with 14 goals and 16 assists appearing In all 36 of the team's games. Prior to Providence he played 4 years in juniors in the USHL with Rochester and Cedar Rapids. He set the all-time scoring mark for the Cedar Rapids Roughriders with 95 points over three seasons.

The Wheeling Nailers open the 2009-2010 campaign on October 16th at the South Carolina Stingrays. The home opener for the 18th season of professional hockey in the Friendly City is October 23rd when the Nailers host the Cincinnati Cyclones.
