Wheeling Nailers News Release

WHEELING, WV. The Wheeling Nailers today announced that they have donated over $100,000 in funds, tickets, merchandise and memorabilia to local non-profit organizations throughout the 2006-07 season. A few of the charitable activities during the 15th Anniversary Season included the 3rd Annual "Golden Spike" Golf Scramble, 15th Annual Teddy Bear Toss, special jersey auctions, 1st Annual St. Baldricks Night, 1st Annual "Nailers at Your Service" Dinner, as well as the donation of tickets, merchandise and memorabilia.

The Nailers kicked off the 2006-07 Season with the 3rd Annual "Golden Spike Association" Charity Golf Scramble. On Wednesday, October 11th, Corporate Sponsors and Fans were paired with Nailers Players for 18 holes of golf, dinner and a day of fun. The Nailers special guests for the event were Hall of Fame Pittsburgh Pirate Bill Mazeroski and Hall of Fame Pittsburgh Penguin Pierre Larouche. The Golden Spike Association raises funds to be used to support area youth and non-profit organizations. This year, the Golf Scramble will take place on Wednesday, October 10th.

The Wheeling Nailers Annual Teddy Bear Toss always brings in great success and many stuffed toys for needy children within the community. The 15th Annual Teddy Bear Toss was held on Saturday, December 2nd during a Nailers home game. Over 1,000 teddy bears and stuffed animals were tossed onto the ice, after the Nailers scored their first goal to kick-off the United States Marines annual Toys for Tots campaign. The Teddy Bear Toss along with Toys for Tots provides happiness and hope to disadvantaged children in the Ohio Valley who might otherwise be overlooked during the holiday season. Over the last 15years, the Wheeling Nailers have collected over 19,000 toys and continue to strive for great success with the help of their fans and supporters. Join the Nailers and the U.S. Marines this season as they again toss the teddies onto the ice on Saturday, November 24th to begin the annual Toys for Tots campaign.

Wheeling Nailers Fans, Sponsors and Team showed their generosity on March 17th, when they helped raise more than $3,000 during the 1st Annual St. Baldricks Night. St. Baldricks Foundation raises research funds and awareness for childhood cancer by hosting events where people shave their heads for donations and to show support for young cancer patients and their families. During the Nailers game, more than 35 heads were shaved, including two Nailers players: Jordan Cameron and Chris Brooks. This years event raised more than 10% of the region's donations.

The inaugural "Nailers at Your Service" Dinner was a completely sold out event. The dinner was held at Generations Restaurant & Pub in Wheeling with Nailers Players and local celebrities serving dinner to over 175 people in attendance. The fun-filled night raised nearly $7,000 for the Mel Blount Youth Home and the Golden Spike Association. The Nailers would like to extend a thank you to Hall of Fame Pittsburgh Steeler Mel Blount for his attendance and the tremendous time and dedication he provides to his two youth homes in the Ohio Valley and in Vidalia, Georgia.

A small list of the organizations that benefited from the Nailers donations include the Northern Panhandle Head Start, Mountain State Parents Child & Adolescent Network, Wheeling Soup Kitchen, WV Youth Advocate Programs, Special Olympics, Northwood Health Systems, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Laughlin Memorial Chapel, Children's Home of Wheeling, House of the Carpenter, St. Alphonsus Youth Center and many more.

The Nailers players, as well as the Nailers mascots Spike and WesBanco Buck, made their presence felt in the community, as they made more than 100 appearances at numerous elementary schools, hospitals and community events and more. The Nailers extend a special thank you to their fans for helping to support the team's charitable causes.
