Wheeling Nailers News Release

WHEELING, WV – The Wheeling Nailers announce that they have signed forward Mike Sgroi. As per club policy terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Sgroi, 26, joins the Nailers for his fifth professional season after playing the majority of the season with the Utah Grizzlies of the AHL.

The 6'5" 240 pound native from Toronto, ONT appeared in 45 games with Utah recording 2 goals, 4 assists, while racking up 152 penalty minutes. He also played in 12 games for the ECHL champions Idaho Steelheads recording 1 goal and 32 penalty minutes.

"Mike is a big tough kid that will add a physical presence on the ice, and also has good hockey skills which will be an asset to our team. He is the type of player that other teams will have to take notice of and make room for our skilled players," said Head Coach Pat Bingham about the acquisition.

When asked about coming to Wheeling this is what Sgroi had to say, "I grew up in a blue collar town, I like the atmosphere and I respect the people in a town like Wheeling." This is Sgroi's response to what type of player he is, "Personally I create space for guys like Jaffray, I maximize their potential. If a guy lays a hand on our skilled guys and I put and end to it."

The Nailers will play tonight at Hamarville Blade Runners at 7 PM against the Chiefs, and again on Saturday at WesBanco Arena at 7:30 PM against Johnstown. There will be a fan fest before the game starting at 3:00. Don't miss your chance to see the Nailers build on last year's historic season.
