Orange County Flyers News Release
WAILUKU, Hawai'i (September 3, 2010) - The Orange County Flyers committed five errors leading to five unearned runs as Na Koa Ikaika Maui went on to win, 9-2, on Friday night at Iron Maehara Stadium. The Flyers slipped into a tie for first in the GBL South Division second-half standings with their playoff foe from Maui.
Jimmy Rohan drove two singles up the middle, going 2-for-4 and setting a new Flyers franchise record with 123 hits in a season, breaking the old mark of 122 set by Jermy Acey in 2008. He is now two hits away from tying the GBL record of 125 hits in a season set by Desi Wilson of Surprise in 2005.
Maui's leadoff man Fehlandt Lentini reached on an error and scored on a Gered Mochizuki ground out, and Jermy Acey knocked a solo homerun for an early 2-0 lead for Na Koa. Mark Okano added an RBI-single in the third inning for a 3-0 Maui lead.
Orange County's Sergio Pedroza smashed his team-leading 14th homerun of the season, a two-run shot, for the only Flyers runs of the game.
OC starter Jesse Smith took the loss in six innings of work, allowing four runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out five and walking two batters. Matt Durkin pitched in relief in the seventh inning, allowing five runs (three earned) thanks in large part to a pair of OC outfield errors as Maui pulled away for the 9-2 win. Bryan Harris tossed a scoreless 8th inning for the Flyers.
The Orange County Flyers (50-32, 28-9 second half) begin a best-of-five playoff series against Na Koa Ikaika Maui (53-25, 27-8) in Maui on Tuesday, September 7, and will host Game 3 of the series on Friday, September 10 at 7:05pm at Goodwin Field. OC will host Games 4 and 5, if necessary, on September 11 and 12.
The Flyers continue this seven-game series to wrap up the regular season in Maui on Saturday, with first pitch at 9:35pm Pacific Time, 6:35pm Hawaiian Time. All games from Maui can be heard live through Live365 with Josh Feldman through www.OrangeCountyFlyers.com.
