Washington Mystics News Release
Washington, D.C. - The Washington Mystics will kick off the 2004 season at MCI Center on Saturday, May 22nd at 6:00 p.m. against the Charlotte Sting.
As in years past, the Mystics will honor inspiring individuals during a special on-court halftime ceremony. This season's theme, "You're Never to Young to Be a Role Model," will pay tribute to individuals that made their impact in society at a young age. The 2004 honorees include:
* Carlotta Walls LaNier, the youngest member (14 at the time) of the Little Rock Nine who, in 1957, bravely stood up against racist threats and intimidation to successfully integrate Little Rock Central High School.
* Dominique Dawes, a gymnast since the age of six, Dawes represented the United States in three Olympics (1992, 1996 and 2000) and was the first African-American gymnast to win a medal in an individual event (bronze).
* Makenzie Snyder, a teenager who created the non-profit organization, "Children to Children" which collects stuffed animals and duffel bags for foster children.
* Jordan Adams, an eight-year old classical pianist who has been featured on Good Morning America and Inside Edition for his talent and dedication to music.
Prior to the game, the Mystics will host its annual street festival, which is free and open to the public. The street festival, scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. and conclude at 5:30 p.m., will be held on F Street (between 6th and 7th Streets NW) in front of the Main Entrance to MCI Center. The festival will feature numerous activities including interactive carnival games, music provided by HOT 99.5, performances by the Mystics youth pep squad the Mayhem and Shaw Junior High School's pep band. Fans should get there by 3:30 p.m. to participate in a pep rally featuring the Mystics team.
"Opening night is always an exciting night for our team and our fans" said Mystics Sr. Vice President of Business and Basketball Operations Judy Holland Burton. "We try to make it a complete night of entertainment with a fantastic street festival, a unique halftime ceremony and, of course, great basketball."
