Washington Mystics News Release
Washington, D.C. â Washington Mystics Senior Vice President of Business and Basketball Operations Judy Holland Burton announced today that Stephanie Ready has been named an Assistant Coach for the Mystics. Ready spent the 2003 season as a feature correspondent and analyst for NBA TV. She also did color commentary for basketball for various networks such as ESPN.
"Stephanie has been involved in basketball on the professional and collegiate levels and she will be a great addition to our staff." said Washington Mystics Head Coach Michael Adams.
In 2001, Ready was named assistant coach of the Greenville Groove of the National Basketball Development League (NBDL), making her the first woman to coach in men's professional sports. She helped guide the team to the league's inaugural championship in 2002 and was with the team until it folded in the summer of 2003.
Prior to joining the NBDL, Ready spent two seasons as the men's basketball assistant coach at Coppin State College. She was the first and only woman to hold the position of full-time recruiting assistant of a men's basketball program at a Division I school.
In addition to Ready and Linda Hargrove, Ledell Eackles will return to the Mystics as an assistant coach. A former NBA player, Eackles joined the team in the 2002 season as an assistant coach and scout. He had previously worked as a scout for the Wizards.
"We are pleased that Ledell will return with us this season," added Adams. "He brings a wealth of knowledge about our team and the game."
Drafted in the second round (36th overall) by the Washington Bullets, Eackles played off-and-on for Washington from 1988-1999. Over the course of six seasons, he averaged 11.3 points per game, 2.3 rebounds per game and shot 44.5% from the field. Eackles played overseas in Israel for two seasons (1999-2000, 2000-2001).
