Mystics Add LaToya Sanders to Bench

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Washington Mystics General Manager and Head Coach Mike Thibault announced that LaToya Sanders has been elevated to assistant coach for the 2021 WNBA season. Sanders recently announced her retirement from the WNBA and had joined the team's player development group. She takes over for Asjha Jones, who was named director of strategy for the NBA's Portland Trailblazers.

"LaToya was an easy and natural choice for this position. She was a great student of the game as a player. She was an exemplar leader on the court, a strong voice in the locker room, and a great mentor for younger teammates," stated Thibault. "She was one of those players who was respected by everyone in the organization. She has done a great job this preseason in her role as a player development coach and has shown us that she is ready for this new role."

An alum of the University of North Carolina, Washington originally acquired Sanders prior to the 2012 season. During Washington's championship season, she averaged 6.1 points and 5.5 rebounds per game and started every regular season and playoffs game. She set numerous milestones with Washington, including recording 48 blocks in a season in 2015 (second in franchise history for the most blocks in a single season) and shooting .607 from the field during the 2018 season, the highest percentage in franchise history.

"During my years with Monumental Sports & Entertainment and the Mystics, I not only grew as a basketball player but I also became a student of the game. I look forward to sharing what I have learned with our players."
