Washington Mystics News Release
Washington, D.C. - Washington Mystics General Manager Linda Hargrove announced today that the team has acquired 6-0 guard/forward Monique Currie from the Chicago Sky in a trade for center Chasity Melvin. With the trade, the Mystics get an explosive player that has roots to the area.
"Monique is a player that we targeted for a couple of years," said General Manager Linda Hargrove. "We feel that she is a strong player and she feels a need for us."
Currie was selected by the Chicago Sky with the first overall pick in the 2007 Dispersal Draft from the Charlotte Sting. She's averaging 14.5 points per game, 6.50 rebounds per game and 1.5 assists per game so far this season. Currie was drafted in the first round (third overall) by the Charlotte Sting in the 2006 WNBA Draft. Last season in Charlotte, Currie averaged 10.0 points per game and 3.9 rebounds per game in 34 games.
Currie and Alana Beard played together at Duke University. At Duke, Currie averaged 15.2 points per game, 6.2 rebounds per game in 140 games. A graduate of The Bullis School in Washington, D.C., she was named the Naismith Prep Player of the Year.
Chasity Melvin was selected by the Cleveland Rockers in the first round (11th overall) of the 1999 Draft. Washington selected Melvin in the 2004 Dispersal Draft. In three seasons with the Mystics, she averaged 10.7 points per game.
Hargrove added, "It was difficult to trade a veteran player, but we feel that Nakia Sanford and our young post players will benefit from the opportunity to compete."
Washington will host the 2007 WNBA All-Star game on July 15th Verizon Center. Tickets are available at Ticket Master at (202) 397-SEAT. Season tickets and partial plans for the 2007 Mystics season are currently on sale and can be purchased by calling the Mystics Sales Office at 1-877-DC-HOOP1 or by visiting the Mystics web site at www.washingtonmystics.com.
