Sky Trades Monique Curry to Mystics for Chasity Melvin

CHICAGO - The Chicago Sky traded guard Monique Currie to the Washington Mystics today for WNBA veteran center Chasity Melvin.

Melvin has played in the WBNA for eight years, and has just started her fourth season for the Mystics. The 6-3 center has a career average 11 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, with a 47% field goal percentage. She scored 22 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in the Mystics' season opening loss against the Connecticut Sun on May 19. She was drafted in the first round (11th overall) of the 1999 WNBA Draft by the Cleveland Rockers, and selected by the Mystics in the Rockers dispersal draft in 2004. Melvin played one season in the ABL and was the 2nd pick in the 1998 ABL Draft. She helped lead North Carolina State University to its first-ever NCAA Final Four appearance in 1998 and led the team in scoring for all four years she played.

In the Mystics' three games against the Sky last season, Melvin had two double doubles, with 20 points and 10 rebounds on July 9, 14 points, 2 blocked shots and a career-high 14 rebounds on July 16, and 14 points (8-for-8 from the field) and 8 rebounds on July 27.

"Chas gives us a big, experienced presence in the paint, which we really need," said Sky Head Coach and GM Bo Overton. "This is a win for both teams. We have depth at the guard spot, with Stacey Dales and Dominique Canty both playing well. Monique is a talented player and the trade gives her the opportunity to play in her hometown."

The Sky selected Currie with the first pick in the Charlotte Sting dispersal draft earlier this year. She started in the Sky's first two regular season games and averaged 14.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, scoring 20 points in the season opener against New York. In her first season in the WNBA, Currie averaged 10 points (fifth among rookies), 2.6 assists (second among rookies) and 3.9 rebounds per game (third among rookies). Charlotte selected her third overall in the 2006 WNBA Draft.
