Chicago Mustangs News Release
Hoffman Estates, IL- The Chicago Mustangs, proud members of the Major Arena Soccer League (www.MASLSoccer.com), defeated the Tulsa Revolution X-X at the Sears Centre Arena on Saturday night.
After a slow start last week against St. Louis, the Mustangs came out firing on all cylinders. After trading possessions early, Chicago was awarded a free kick that forward Hewerton Moreira placed top-shelf before goalkeeper Richard Nolasco could even react. Just two minutes later, midfielder Taylor Bond received a pass from forward Matthew Stewart, dribbled to center and ripped it past Nolasco. Moreira got in on the action again with 8 minutes to go in the first quarter on a ball that deflected off of the wall to give the Mustangs a 3-0 lead. Midfielder Lucas Bunster Almeida got Tulsa back into the game with just over 6 minutes to go in the first after he took a nice pass from defenseman Justin Hersey and tapped it past Chicago goalie Jesus Flores to narrow the score to 3-1.
Stewart got the scoring going again just 7 minutes into the 2nd quarter when he drew Nolasco into an aggressive defense and finessed one past the Revolution keeper to extend the lead back to 3 goals. Tulsa answered quickly when their leading scorer, forward Michael Poneys, returned the favor and tapped one right under an aggressive Flores. Chicago forward Semir Mesanovic took back the momentum just a minute later when he kicked one off the boards and it deflected off the back of Nolasco and into the net. The goal was Mesanovic's first as a Mustang. Chicago followed up with 2 goals within seconds of each other as defensemen Guillherme Veiga and Omar Santillan were able to add to the lead and make the score 7-2. As the half wound down, midfielder Victor Sanchez added a goal to give the Mustangs a 6-goal cushion at the half.
Tulsa came out of the second half with a few quick opportunities that were denied by Flores before Moreira grabbed the reigns and continued his torrid night. 1:30 into the 3rd quarter, Moreira scored a goal to complete the hat-trick and extend the lead 8-2. Moreira again found the back of the net 12 minutes later when he booted a long shot past Nolasco for his 4th on the night. Sanchez added another goal less than a minute later on a beautiful touch shot to the far post for his second of the night to give the Mustangs an 11-2 lead. Just before the quarter ended, Bond added a 2nd goal as well off of a long kick from Sanchez to give Chicago a 10-goal lead going into the final quarter.
As if there was any doubt he was feeling it tonight, the Hewerton Moreira show continued just 2 minutes into the 4th as he scored his 5th goal of the night from point blank range on another assist from Stewart to make the score 13-2. The Mustangs added to the lead midway through the 4th when defenseman Joshio Sandoval threaded the needle to Veiga who tapped the ball into an open net for his second goal of the night and a 14-2 lead. Forward Alexis Camarena joined in on the fun with 7 minutes to go in the game when he fired a shot off of Nolasco's hands that deflected off the top crossbar and bounced down into the goal. Bogar Moreno assisted on the play. Camarena joined the 2-goal club with 2:30 to go in the game on a one-timer from Bond to lead to the eventual final score of 16-2.
