Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Mussels got three hits from Dylan Neuse and a strong pitching performance to blow out the Dunedin Blue Jays 11-1 at TD Ballpark Thursday.
Neuse finished 3-for-4 with a walk, double and RBI. Rafael Cruz and Alec Sayre also notched multiple hits in the win.
Fort Myers (48-51, 14-19) got solid pitching all night. Juan Mercedes wiggled out of a pair of jams and did not allow an earned run over four innings, fanning four and walking three. Left-hander Samuel Perez (6-2) followed, allowing just one base runner over three dominant innings, striking out three. Johnathan Lavallee covered the final two innings, scattering two hits while fanning a pair.
Dunedin (45-54, 13-20) starting pitcher Kendry Rojas (3-5) worked a scoreless first innings but pitched with heavy base traffic after that. With the Jays leading 1-0 in the top of the second, Nate Baez walked before Neuse ripped a single to center. With two outs, Maddux Houghton slashed a single to right to tie the game 1-1. With Neuse at third, Rojas balked to force in a run and give the Mussels a 2-1 advantage.
Leading by that margin in the top of the third, Cruz doubled to left before Baez walked. Neuse then drilled a double to left to plate Cruz and make it 3-1. The next batter was Kyle Schmidt, who pulled a two-run single through the left side to cap the inning at 5-1 Fort Myers.
Leading 6-1 in top of the eighth, Sayre dropped a single into center before Houghton walked. Sayre then scored on two consecutive balks to make it 7-1. With two outs, Ricardo Olivar lined a single into left to score Houghton and extend the lead to 8-1. The Mussels tacked on two more runs in the ninth against a pair of Dunedin position players.
The Mussels will look to clinch a split of the series at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. RHP Ben Ethridge (1-5, 2.42) gets the start for Fort Myers, opposed by LHP Ricky Tiedemann (Double-A Rehab) of Dunedin. Coverage begins at 6:15 p.m. on the Mighty Mussels Baseball Network.
