Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, Manitoba -- Representatives of the Westman Dreams for Kids Foundation will be at the Keystone Centre Saturday to accept a generous donation on behalf of the Goals for Kids Campaign, from a former captain of the Brandon Wheat Kings.

A former member of the Calgary Flames, Philadelpia Flyers and Carolina Hurricanes, Marty Murray is currently playing with the National Hockey League's Los Angeles Kings. During last summer's 4th Annual Marty Murray Golf Tournament in Melita, a total of $19,000 was raised for Goals for Kids. The cheque presentation will be made before the start of the second period of Saturday's Western Hockey League game between the Wheat Kings and Seattle Thunderbirds.

Chosen the WHL's Player of the Year in 1995, Murry scored 132 goals and 392 points in 264 career games and is the eventh highest scorer in franchise history.

The annual tournament has been a tremendous success over the years and has attracted a who's who of hockey personalities. Among those hitting the links last July in Melita were Murray, Ryan Craig of the Tampa Bay Lightning, Buffalo's James Patrick, Wheat Kings coaches Kelly McCrimmon and Dwayne Gylywoychuk as well as WHLers Mark Derlago and Tyler Dittmer of Brandon, Calgary's Carson McMillan and Jacob Dietrich of the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

In the four years that Marty has hosted his hockey celebrity tournament in Melita, close to $70,000 has been generated for Goals for Kids. Besides enry fees and corporate donations, the money was raised from a silent auction and raffle.

Marty's father Ian will be in attendance on Saturday night to present the cheque to Westman Dreams.

On the ice, the Wheat Kings close out a mini 2-game road trip Friday night in Prince Albert, before returning home to play Seattle on Saturday. Brandon enters the weekend with a record of 21-14-2-6, good for first place in the Eastern Division and a six point lead on the second place Swift Current Broncos.

Tickets to Saturday night's game are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca.
