GAME NOTES: The WHEAT KINGS close out a 2-game road trip Friday night in PRINCE ALBERT against the RAIDERS...BRANDON is coming off a 3-2 Overtime Shootout loss in REGINA on Tuesday...The loss was BRANDON'S sixth Shootout defeat of the season (WHEATS are 2-6 in Shootouts and 2-2-6 in ten overtime games)...BRANDON is 2-1-0-1 in its last four road games...WHEAT KINGS return home to play host to the SEATTLE THUNDERBIRDS on Saturday night...BRANDON enters the weekend with a record of 21-14-2-6, good for 50 points and a six point lead on the second place SWIFT CURRENT BRONCOS in the Eastern Division (BRONCOS have a game in hand entering weekend play)...As for the Conference, the WHEAT KINGS remain in fifth place - one point behind both CALGARY and RED DEER...BRANDON is 3-1-0-2 since its 10-day Christmas break...WHEATS are currently 13-3-1-3 at the Keystone Centre and 8-11-1-3 on the road...They're 4-2-0-4 in their last ten games and 1-1-0-1 in 2007...BRANDON has managed at least a point in nine of their last 11 games...In games against Eastern Division rivals, the WHEATS are 10-6-2-4...Eight of 13 games this month will be played on the road.
WHEATIES ADD SCORING PUNCH AT DEADLINE: The WHEAT KINGS added some scoring at Wednesday's WHL Trade Deadline, acquiring 20-year old left-winger ROBERT KLINKHAMMER from the PORTLAND WINTER HAWKS in exchange for captain TEEGAN MOORE and a second round pick in the 2007 bantam draft...KLINKHAMMER is currently tied for 7th in the WHL in goals with 23 and is among the league scoring leaders with 42 points in 38 games...MOORE was 4-10-14...In 202 career games in the WHL, the 6'3" 212 lb Lethbridge product is 47-46-93-224 penalty minutes.
VS. PRINCE ALBERT: This is the sixth meeting of the season between these two teams with BRANDON having won three of the first 5 games...WHEATIES have outscored PRINCE ALBERT 20-17...MARK DERLAGO (3-4-7), CODEY BURKI (5-1-6), JURAJ SIMEK (2-4-6) and DUSTIN KOHN (1-5-6) lead the WHEATS in scoring during the season series while TYLER PLANTE is 2-1-0 with a 2.92 goals against average in three appearances.
NEW CAPTAIN: With the recent departure of TEEGAN MOORE, 20-year old veteran MARK DERLAGO has been named the 49th captain in WHEAT KINGS' franchise history...One of only two WHEAT KINGS to play in all 72 games last season, the former Manitoba AAA Midget League scoring champion is currently 26-20-46 in 43 games.
LAST GAME: GARRETT FESTERLING'S powerplay goal midway through the third period tied the game and then defenceman LOGAN PYETT notched the Overtime Shootout winner in REGINA'S 3-2 victory over the visiting WHEAT KINGS on Tuesday night...Rookie NATHAN GREEN and former NEEPAWA NATIVE ANDREW CLARK scored goals in a losing cause on Tuesday...BRANDON went 0-6 on the powerplay and outshot the PATS 41-38...BRANDON has won just one of five games against REGINA this season (1-1-0-3).
MILESTONES: Netminder TYLER PLANTE, the WHEAT KINGS' TIP TOP TAILOR PLAYER OF THE MONTH for December (2.73 goals against average and a .914 save pct in 10 appearances), is one of only four BRANDON goalkeepers to eclipse the 8,000 minute mark...PLANTE is currently 122 minutes shy of ROBERT McVICAR on the WHEATS' all time list. As for games played, he's played 144 games (3 back of McVICAR and third place all time)...CODEY BURKI'S assist against the BLADES last Friday was the 150th point of his WHL career...DUSTIN KOHN is five assists shy of 100...17-year old rookie NATHAN GREEN scored his first ever WHL goal on Friday vs. SASKATOON and then scored his first ever goal on the road in Tuesday's loss to the PATS in REGINA 8230;Newly acquired ROB KLINKHAMMER
BY THE NUMBERS: CODEY BURKI, who is still looking for his first goal since returning from the National Junior Selection Camp last month in CALGARY, is one point behind WHL scoring leader RYAN WHITE with 54 points in 41 games...MARK DERLAGO is 15th in the WHL but fourth in goals (26)...DERLAGO, JURAJ SIMEK and ROB KLINKHAMMER are tied for 5th in the WHL with 14 powerplay goals...SIMEK is second in goals among first year players (22)...DANIEL BARTEK'S 3 shorthanded goals is second in the league among WHL rookies...DUSTIN KOHN is fourth among blueliners with 29 assists. His 31 points is good for 10th in the WHL...TYLER PLANTE is third in the WHL in saves (954) and fourth in minutes played (2029)...JEFF TOPILKO led the WHEATS in scoring last month (5-6-11)...Prince Albert native THERAN YEO is third in the WHL with 138 penalty minutes...BRANDON'S powerplay is currently 4th in the WHL (20.4%) while its penalty killing is 15th (80.9%)...WHEATS are 14-2-2-2 when they score first.
