Wilson Tobs News Release
WILSON, N.C.- The Wilson Tobs (8-9) used 13 hits and an impressive pitching performance to power past the Outer Banks Daredevils (7-9), 10-3 on Saturday night in front of 1,275 on hand at Fleming Stadium.
RHP Clay Murphy (1-0), making just his second start of the summer for Wilson, held the Daredevils hitless through the first five innings, and pitched a shutout through the first seven innings. In total, Murphy went eight innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits, while not walking a batter and striking out nine to earn the win. RHP Tony Wieber worked a scoreless ninth for the Tobs.
Wilson's offense got going in the third inning when the Tobs batted around, using five hits to push three runs across the plate and take a 3-0 advantage. Catcher Keith Morrisroe, LF Joe Costigan, and 2B Alex Jones each had an RBI single in the inning.
In the bottom of the sixth it was one swing that did the damage and put the game out of reach. With runners on the corners and one out, CF Ryan Mathews laced a pitch well over the left-centerfield wall for his second homer of the season, putting Wilson ahead 6-0.
The Tobs added two more in the seventh on a sac fly by Jones and an error by Daredevils 3B Chris Reese. After the Outer Banks collected all three of their runs in the eighth, Wilson struck for two more in the bottom of the frame thanks to a two-run double by RF Ryan Daughtry, who finished 4 for 5 on the night at the plate.
RHP Brandon Smith (2-2) got tagged with the loss for the Daredevils in his second outing against Wilson this summer. Smith lasted 5 1/3 innings, giving up six runs (all earned) on nine hits, while walking one and striking out one.
After an off day tomorrow, the Tobs return to action Monday, June 20 at home against the Petersburg Generals. It will be the fourth meeting this season between the Tobs and the Generals, and first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm at Fleming Stadium. On the hill for Wilson will be RHP Gil Walker (1-0), making his third start of the season. For tickets call the Tobs box office at 252-291-TOBS.
