Morehead City Marlins News Release

Morehead City, N.C. - "Dominant" may not even be the word to describe Shawn Armstrong's performance on Saturday night. The second-year Marlin out of East Carolina tossed eight shutout innings and struck out a whopping fifteen batters, while only surrendering two hits and walking one hitter in the Morehead City Marlins' 7-0 victory over the Florence RedWolves. With the win, the Marlins bring their record back to .500 (9-9), and Florence falls to 9-8 on the season.

After two starts this season, Armstrong has given up two runs over 13 innings pitched. He has fanned 21 opposing batters, walking only six, and allowing eight hits. The sophomore's exceptional night drops his ERA to 1.38 and helps to snap a 3-game skid for the Marlins.

The excellent pitching was not the only thing that went well for the Marlins in the win, although Tyler Moore struck out two in another perfect ninth inning to cap it off. Not many balls were put into play because of Armstrong's strikeouts, but the Marlins defense was able to make plays when it had to.

A few Marlins hitters had good days, as well. Shortstop Joe Sclafani, who was a teammate of Armstrong's in Morehead City last summer, was 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored. His partner in the middle infield, second baseman Danny Diekroeger, also drove in two runs with a double in the first inning.

The Marlins will take the day off on Sunday, preparing for a five-day road trip that includes visits in Wilmington, Fayetteville, Florence, and Columbia. Returning to Big Rock Stadium next Saturday, June 25, the Marlins will host the SwampDogs for the Ladies Night Beach Bag Giveaway, sponsored by GirlTalk Gynecology. The official game time is 7:05 p.m., and gates will open at 6 o'clock, as usual.

The Morehead City Marlins are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league.
