Reading Fightin Phils News Release
READING, Pa.---Anchored by a pair of home runs from Jim Murphy and Albert Cartwright, the Reading Fightin Phils (6-4) put away the Erie SeaWolves (4-5), 8-5, Sunday afternoon at FirstEnergy Stadium. The series win was the Fightins second straight of the fledgling season.
The Fightins rallied from a one-run deficit in the first inning after first baseman Jim Murphy launched a two-out, two-run home run. By hitting his second home run of the season, Murphy increased his team-high hitting streak to nine games. During the streak, Murphy is hitting .421 (16-for-38). The Washingtonian also had an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Erie tied things in the third inning when Wade Gaynor drove home Daniel Field on a sacrifice fly. Reading didn't waste any time in taking back the lead following a Troy Hanzawa RBI single that plated Albert Cartwright. An inning later, Cartwright capped off a four-run inning with a two-run home run. The Bahaman has hits in all but two games this year.
Much like the Fightins' other win over Erie this season, the SeaWolves threatened late after they Luis Castillo hit a two-run double to left field to cut the Fightins' lead to four. With Castillo now on second, left fielder Derrick Mitchell made a stunning grab along the foul line to stave off the SeaWolves rally. Johnson then induced the next Erie hitters to ground out and fly out, respectively, to end the inning.
Right-handed pitcher Brody Colvin was effective in his second start of the season. Colvin, who picked up his second winning decision in nine Double-A starts, allowed two earned runs on three hits and three walks. The former LSU commit also struck out two batters.
Reliever Kyle Simon came on in the eighth inning and recorded five outs for his Eastern League-leading third save. Entering 2013 as the Phillies 30th-best prospect according to Baseball America, Simon has only allowed four earned runs in 17 appearances with the Reading franchise between 2012 and 2013.
Reading begins a short two-game series against the Harrisburg Senators on Monday night at 6:35 p.m. RHP David Buchanan (1-1, 6.75 ERA) will take the hill against Harrisburg's RHP Blake Treinen (0-2, 15.26 ERA). Tune into Oldies 1340 WRAW-AM or MiLB.TV for the game broadcast with Fightins play-by-play announcer Anthony Oppermann starting at 6:05 p.m.
Fightins Fillers: Prior to the game, the Wyomissing Fightins were introduced to the crowd of 5,411 at FirstEnergy Stadium. The Wyomissing Fightins are the first youth baseball team to don the new logo of the Reading ballclub.
The Fightin Phils continue their 47th season affiliated with the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday at 6:05 p.m. when they give away a Fightin Phils Baseballtown Collector's Postcard to the first 500 adults 15 and over thanks to Crime Alert Berks County.
