Munson Takes Off

For someone who was initially skeptical of the confines of indoor football, wide receiver Mark Munson is awfully skilled in finding open space.

Like most college football players, Munson wanted to play on Sundays with tens of thousands watching from stadium seats. After not making an NFL roster, he landed with the Arizona Rattlers in 2018.

He arrived in the desert not conditioned for the next level and spent the year on the practice squad, learning what went into being a pro and how to get his body ready. Munson was pushed outside his college-ball comfort zone.

"At the pro level, no matter where it's at, they just kind of throw everything at you," Munson said. "It was tough at first for me."

It took a few weeks to adapt. Even though making a strong impression, he'd still have to wait his turn.

"They had their guys," said Munson. "I didn't fulfill my end of the deal in coming to camp in shape. It was a definite learning experience."

Munson soon joined NAL with the Jacksonville Sharks. This time around, Munson came ready to play. In his first in-game action, he snagged a touchdown pass.

After winning a championship in Florida, Munson returned to Texas to join the Fighters. On the field, Munson said his role is larger than catching touchdowns and being the quarterback's safety valve. As a veteran, he's a vocal leader.

"We have rookies out there that sometimes line up in the wrong spot," said Munson. "But I can see it coming and correct it. Now, it's kind of being a second quarterback on the field that can direct people and help them get going.

Currently, Munson paces the Fighters with 26 total receptions and 35 receiving yards a game. His 14.8 yards per catch average is good enough for fourth in the league. Munson also leads the Fighters in receiving scores and might have the most discernable celebration on the team, as well.

At a practice absent of energy, Munson decided to celebrate each score. Coaches yelled for him to take off, so he threw his arms back and made believe to be a jet on an airport runway, unaware that he looked like Naruto.

"When I got to the game and did it, the kids took to it and were like, 'Yeah, it's from a cartoon!'" Munson said.

Against Spokane Saturday evening, Munson pulled in two footballs for 20 yards. He'll look to get back in the endzone at home against the Green Bay Blizzard in this week's Stadium Network IFL Game of the Week. Kickoff is set for Saturday at 7:05 p.m. CT.
