Carolina Mudcats News Release
ZEBULON, NC - The Carolina Mudcats scored a pair of thrilling, one-run victories to sweep a twin bill and the series against the Wilmington Blue Rocks on Saturday night at Five County Stadium.
A crowd of 4,778 looked on as the Mudcats scored three in the last of the seventh to win game one 9-8 before holding on for a 6-5 win in the nightcap.
The Mudcats (3-0, 35-38) rallied three times on the evening, and twice in game one. The Blue Rocks (0-3, 29-44) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first against starter Mike Rayl. The lefty allowed seven hits in the frame before settling in to toss 4.2 scoreless innings.
Rayl gave his team an opportunity to even the score. Carolina did that and then some. The Mudcats scored five in the fourth thanks to three hits and two Wilmington errors. A two-run triple from Bo Greenwell highlighted the surge.
A double by Carlos Moncrief brought in the go-ahead run in the fifth before the Blue Rocks put on their rally caps.
Down to their final out in the seventh, the Blue Rocks scored three runs on three hits and two errors for an 8-6 lead, but the Mudcats would not be denied. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with one out. A walk to Jake Lowery cut the Blue Rocks' lead down to one. With two out, Anthony Gallas ripped a ground ball to third that went between the legs of Cheslor Cuthbert. The error allowed the two winning runs to cross home.
Jose Flores (1-2) earned his first win thanks to the comeback. Nick Rogers dropped to 1-2 for Wilmington.
Carolina rallied from a three-run deficit in game two. The Mudcats put together another five-run inning. Ronny Rodriguez cracked a two-run homer to pull the score closer, 3-2. Tyler Holt singled in the go-ahead run after a Delvi Cid double, and later scored on a stolen base and two errors.
J.D. Reichenbach (3-1) picked up the win in relief, tossing 3.2 innings. The lefty did not allow a run, scattered two hits and struck out a pair. Grant Sides earned the save in his Mudcats debut with a scoreless seventh.
Tyler Sample took the loss, allowing six runs over 5.1 innings.
Carolina welcomes the Frederick Keys to Five County Stadium for a four-game series on Sunday, June 24. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m. Tickets are available through the box office by calling (919) 269-2287 or visiting carolinamudcats.com.
