Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WOODBRIDGE, VA - The Dash mashed their way to season highs in runs and hits in a 16-6 pummeling of the Potomac Nationals Saturday night at Pfitzner Stadium.

The Dash (1-2, 45-27-1) scored a run in each of their first eight innings before being set down in order in the ninth. In Major League Baseball history, only seven teams have scored in all nine innings of a game, and Winston-Salem was one frame away from pulling off the same feat.

Winston-Salem scored a season-best 16 runs, which is the highest total since the club also scored 16 times in a win over Salem May 8, 2010. The last time Winston-Salem scored more than 16 runs was April 27, 2006, when the Warthogs pummeled Frederick 19-2.

The Dash also banged out a season-high 20 hits, which is the club's highest hit output since August 21, 2011, when Winston recorded 23 hits in a blowout win over Potomac (2-1, 33-40). Speaking of the P-Nats, the Dash have scored 15 or more runs three times against them this year.

With the getaway day victory, the Dash avoided a sweep in Woodbridge. Winston-Salem is the only squad in the Carolina League that has not been swept thus far this season.

All nine Dash swingers had at least one hit and one RBI. Eight of the nine starters plated at least one run.

Dan Black extended his hitting streak to seven games with a two-out RBI single in the first inning. The Dash plated a pair of runs in the second thanks to Juan Silverio's RBI groundout and Marcus Semien's seventh homer of the year.

In the third, Silverio capped off a four-run inning with a three-run double down the left field line. Winston-Salem added three more runs in the fourth, with Cyle Hankerd and Michael Earley each driving in a run.

Brady Shoemaker continued Winston-Salem's offensive explosion with a towering two-run home run to left in the fifth frame. Shoemaker is now in the top three in the Carolina League in homers (12) and runs batted in (55) this season.

Silverio continued his stellar day with an RBI single in the sixth inning. Carlos Sanchez chipped in with a sacrifice fly to finish off the Dash's fifth multi-run inning.

Trayce Thompson clubbed a solo homer in the seventh inning for his league-leading 13th blast of the campaign. Silverio then punctuated a six-RBI day with a monster homer to lead off the eighth inning. Silverio matched a Dash-high in runs batted in during a single game, and he posted his highest RBI total since rookie ball.

Dash starter Jake Petricka allowed five runs, four of which were earned, in four and a third innings. Out of the bullpen, Taylor Thompson made his return from a four-week disabled list stint and tossed an inning and two-thirds, allowing one run. Steven Upchurch (1-0) whiffed four in two scoreless frames for his first career High-A win, and Nick McCully wrapped up with the win after allowing a single tally in the bottom of the ninth.

The two best teams in the Carolina League during the first half square off in the first of four at BB&T Ballpark Sunday afternoon at 5:00. Southpaw Blair Walters makes his first career High-A start after working as Low-A Kannapolis' ace during the first half. Salem sends righty Brandon Workman (4-3, 3.12 ERA) to the mound. Pre-game coverage begins at 4:45 on wsdash.com.
