Carolina Mudcats News Release

LYNCHBURG, V.A - The Carolina Mudcats scored five runs in the sixth inning as they cruised past the Lynchburg Hillcats 9-5 on Friday night at Bank on the James Stadium.

Carolina (75-47 overall, 34-23 second half) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a Filippo Di Turi sacrifice fly before adding on with three runs in the fifth. The three-run frame was highlighted by an RBI knock from Jose Acosta and another sacrifice fly from Di Turi and a 4-0 Mudcats advantage.

Lynchburg (64-57 overall, 27-29 second half) got back in the game with single tallies in the fourth and fifth innings with the big hit coming in the fifth on a Ryan Cesarini triple to make it 4-2. However, that would be as close as the Hillcats would get.

Carolina's offense exploded in a big way in the sixth with that five-run frame. Blayberg Diaz got the scoring started with a two-run single to right field and on the play, the right fielder Luis Merejo misplayed the ball allowing Miguel Briceno to score and give the Mudcats the 7-2 lead.

Later in the frame, Acosta collected his second RBI hit of the night and Reidy Mercado capped the scoring with a single for the 9-2 lead.

The Hillcats would strike for three runs in the bottom of eighth inning Merejo collected a two-run knock which was followed by a single from Manuel Mejias to bring home another and make it a 9-5 Carolina lead.

That would be it for Lynchburg as the Mudcats held on for their fourth straight win to claim the series.

Carolina and Lynchburg continue their series Saturday night with first pitch set for 6:30 p.m. The Mudcats returns to Five County Stadium for the final home stand of the regular season on Tuesday, September 3 as they host the Delmarva Shorebirds.
