Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, N.C. - After watching the Winston-Salem Dash erase a four-run deficit by scoring five in the eighth, the Carolina Mudcats responded with three of their own to survive 8-7 on a wild Saturday night at Five County Stadium. A crowd of 5,868 watched the Mudcats rally to take the series over the Dash, and improve to 17-30 on the year.
Carolina is 5-0 at home against Winston-Salem (23-23) this year.
J.D. Reichenbach (2-2) gets the win after blowing the save in the eighth. Owen Dew pitched the ninth inning, allowing a run on two hits, for his first save.
Terance Marin (3-3) took the loss after the right-hander surrendered three runs on three hits over two innings in relief.
Trailing 5-1, the Dash took the lead against the Mudcats' bullpen in the eighth on a three-run homer by Kevin Smith off of reliever Grant Sides. Following a change to bring on J.D. Reichenbach, a single and a walk put runners on with one out. Grant Buckner doubled in the tying run. A sacrifice fly by Mark Tracy plated the go-ahead run.
Now down 6-5, the Mudcats wasted no time in retaliating. Tyler Naquin singled to start the bottom of the frame. A balk on Marin moved Naquin to second. Francisco Lindor beat out a bunt single up the third base line as Naquin raced to third. Jordan Smith drew a walk to load the bases.
Tony Wolters hit into a potential double play, but the turn by shortstop Chris Curley sailed into the Dash dugout, allowing two runs to score. Wolters scored from second on a base hit by Bo Greenwell for an 8-6 lead.
The Dash attempted one last rally, but Rangel Ravelo struck out swinging to end the game with the tying run at first.
Carolina stormed out to a 5-1 lead through eight innings thanks in large part to a three-run third. Joey Wendle tripled home Francisco Lindor following a double. Wendle scored on a single by Tony Wolters for a 2-0 lead. Charlie Valerio hit a grounder to second, scoring Jordan Smith for a 3-0 lead.
The Mudcats added to the lead by scoring twice in the sixth on a Naquin single, and a bases-loaded walk to Smith.
The comeback erased a quality start for Nick Pasquale. The right-hander held Winston-Salem to a run on two hits over six innings in his longest outing of the year. Naquin and Francisco Lindor paced the offense with three hits apiece, and Tony Wolters drove in two runs.
The Mudcats go for the series sweep against Winston-Salem on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. Kids can run the bases following the game, weather permitting. Purchase tickets today by calling (919) 269-2287, or visiting carolinamudcats.com.
