
Mudcats Held to One Hit in 2-0 Loss in Delmarva

SALISBURY - Jace Avina's one-out single in the second ended up being the only hit for the Carolina Mudcats in a 2-0 loss to the Delmarva Shorebirds on Friday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, MD. The shutout loss was Carolina's ninth of the season and dropped the Mudcats (20-20, 54-52) into a 2-2 tie in the six-game series with the Shorebirds (15-25, 36-69).
Delmarva starter Juan De Los Santos and reliever Yaqui Rivera combined on the one-hit shutout with De Los Santos going four innings with four strikeouts and Rivera (2-1) pitching through five perfect innings to finish it while earning the win. Rivera also struck out six and recorded 15 straight outs to finish the game after entering in the fifth.
Alexander Vallecillo started for Carolina and ended up allowing just one earned run and two total over five innings pitched. Vallecillo (0-2) struck out four, walked two and scattered four hits while taking his second straight loss.
Relievers Jeison Pena and Brannon Jordan combined on the final three innings with Pena working through two scoreless with four strikeouts and Jordan totaling two strikeouts in the eighth.
Delmarva's Isaac De Leon and Federick Bencosme scored the only runs of the game for the Shorebirds with De Leon scoring in the second and Bencosme coming across in the fourth. De Leon's run came after he doubled to start the second before moving to third on a passed ball and scoring from third on an errant throw by catcher Alex Hall. The passed ball and throwing error occurred on the same play. Bencosme also doubled before scoring on an Elio Prado single in the fourth.
The one-hit, shutout loss was Carolina's second of the season as they were also shut out and held to one hit on June 25, 2022 at Down East.
