Mudcats Fall Short

Zebulon, NC- The Tennessee Smokies fought off several late Mudcat rallies to hold on for a 3-2 win over Carolina Sunday afternoon in front of 5,216 at Five County Stadium, lowering Carolina's elimination number to four.

Lefty Jeremy Papelbon (W, 5-5) tossed a gem on behalf of Tennessee, holding Carolina scoreless over 6 2/3 innings while striking out four. Reliever Marcos Mateo (H, 4) ran into trouble in the eighth inning and allowed two earned runs before reliever David Cales (S, 1) came in to record the final out with a runner in scoring position. Cales then allowed a sacrifice bunt sandwiched in between two singles in the final frame. In the bottom of the ninth Logan Parker, who represented the tying run, was thrown out at the plate on a fielder's choice ground ball. Kristopher Negron followed with a strike out to end the game.

Carolina's bats were dormant early as Papelbon took a no-hitter into the fifth before a Justin Tordi double broke it up. In the eighth inning Zack Cozart plated a run on a fielder's choice grounder to second and Shaun Cumberland hit an RBI double for the Mudcats lone runs.

Starter Tom Cochran (L, 4-6) allowed all three runs although only one was earned. Two unearned runs came in on a costly Negron fielding error in the sixth inning.

With the win, coupled with West Tenn's loss to Birmingham, Tennessee moved into a first place tie with the Diamond Jaxx with 13 games to play.

Carolina looks for their first win of the series Monday night at 7:15 PM at Five County Stadium with Jerry Gil starting against Andrew Cashner.
