ZEBULON, N.C. - Jeremy Papelbon did it all to help the Tennessee Smokies (30-27) beat the Carolina Mudcats (20-37) with a 3-2 score on Sunday afternoon at Five County Stadium.

Papelbon turned in one of his best starts of the season, tossing six and two thirds scoreless innings, allowing only four hits while also striking out four batters while not allowing a walk.

Blake Lalli put Tennessee on the board in the third inning, as his single brought in Starlin Castro to give the Smokies a one run lead.

Papelbon was also helpful with the bat, as he reached on an error by Carolina third baseman Kris Negron that brought in two runs in the top of the sixth to give Tennessee a 3-0 lead.

Carolina got on the board in the eighth, scoring two runs off of Smokies reliever Marcos Mateo to cut the Tennessee lead to 3-2.

Smokies reliever David Cales earned his first Southern League save of the year by getting the final four outs of the game.

Tennessee will host the final home series of the season from Aug. 28 to Sept. 1 against the Mobile BayBears, the AA affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Tickets can be purchased by calling 286-2300, or by visiting smokiesbaseball.com.
