Carolina Mudcats News Release
KINSTON - Jean Carmona and Jose Sibrian both had two-hit games and reliever Miguel Segura struck out four over two scoreless frames, but the Down East Wood Ducks broke a scoreless tie in the fifth with a six-run inning while defeating the Carolina Mudcats 6-0 on Friday night at Grainger Stadium in Kinston.
The Mudcats (0-1) were shut out by the Wood Ducks (1-0) for the second time in the series and suffered their fourth straight loss. Jean Carmona led the way for the Carolina offense as he had a triple in the second and a single in the ninth while going 2-for-4.
The game was scoreless through the fourth before Down East put together a six-run inning against starter Jeferson Figueroa and reliever Pablo Garabitos. Figueroa (0-4) ended up with the loss after allowing four runs and three hits over four and 1/3 innings. He also walked four and struck out three.
Figueroa had allowed just one hit in the game before allowing three hits and issuing three walks in the fifth. His third of those three walks forced in a run and was followed by a Daniel Mateo two-run single. Garabitos was then brought in out of the Carolina pen, and would allow two inherited runners to score.
Josh Stephan earned the win for the Wood Ducks after holding the Mudcats scoreless over six full innings. Stephan (3-1) additionally walked two and struck out eight.
