Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - In conjunction with the Chicago White Sox, the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers have announced a roster move on Friday, June 24. Infielder Colson Montgomery, the consensus number one prospect in the White Sox organization, has been promoted from the Ballers to the Winston-Salem Dash, Advanced-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox.
A three-sport athlete at Southridge High School, Montgomery garnered attention for not only his skills on the diamond, but also on the hardwood as a basketball player. The 6'4" infielder earned looks from big name schools such as Purdue and the University of Louisville for his skills as Southridge's star guard. Montgomery is still Southridge's all-time leading scorer with 1,966 points.
Ultimately choosing baseball, Montgomery was selected 22nd overall by the Chicago White Sox in the 2021 MLB Draft, becoming the first ever draftee from Southridge High School.
Montgomery spent 45 games with Kannapolis in 2022, making the opening day roster out of spring training. The Holland, Indiana native wasted no time in making his presence felt, reaching base in each of his first eight games with the Ballers. Montgomery completes his tenure with Kannapolis having reached base in 41 of his 45 games in a Kannapolis uniform.
In Montgomery's 45 games, the Indiana native completes his time with the Ballers batting .324 with 12 doubles, a triple, four home runs, and 26 RBI.
The first of many home runs as a professional baseball player for Montgomery came on April 21 at Atrium Health Ballpark, an opposite field line-drive against the Fredericksburg Nationals, who held first place at the time in the Carolina League.
From April 25 to May 13, Montgomery was held out of game action as a precaution for a potential upper-body injury, with the lefty-bat making his return on May 14 in Fredericksburg.
Picking up where he left off, Montgomery kept finding ways to produce at the plate, batting .327 with 8 RBI in the month of May alone.
An aspect of his game that is not nearly brought up as much as it should, Montgomery's plate discipline is ultimately what separates the rest of the field from the White Sox No. 1 prospect. In 45 games, Montgomery struck out just 42 times, drawing 26 walks along the way.
Montgomery joins many top prospects to have spent time in Kannapolis, however the star prospect is the first ever No. 1 prospect in the White Sox organization in MLB Pipeline history to actively hold No. 1 prospect status while playing for Kannapolis. Every time fans stepped into Atrium Health Ballpark in the first half of the 2022 season, the chances are high that fans got a glimpse of a future MLB superstar who wore No. 12 and played shortstop.
The Kannapolis Cannon Ballers begin the second half of the 2022 season on Friday night in a 7:00 p.m. first pitch matchup with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. The Ballers roster remains one of the most talented in all of Low-A baseball, including top prospects such as RHP Norge Vera, IF Wes Kath, and a multitude of other top prospects in the White Sox organzation. Fans can purchase tickets for any upcoming home games at kcballers.com or at the F&M Bank Box Office located at Atrium Health Ballpark.
