Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, N.C. - The Carolina Mudcats could not think of a better scenario to begin the 2013 season than a three-game sweep of the Winston-Salem Dash. With a 6-2 win on Sunday afternoon, they got exactly that.
The Mudcats improved to 3-0 on the year by holding the Dash (0-3) scoreless for six straight innings while building a 4-0 advantage. Winston-Salem chipped away with a solo home run by Chris Curley in the seventh and back-to-back eighth inning doubles to plate a run, but that was as close as it would get.
Joey Wendle launched his first home run, a two-run shot that towered over the right field wall, to put the game away in the bottom of the eighth. The bomb capped a four-RBI performance for Wendle.
Francisco Jimenez (1-0) earned the win in relief, tossing three frames. He held the Dash to a run on two hits. Enosil Tejeda notched his first save in his debut, allowing a run on two hits over the final two innings.
Dash starter Chris Beck (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing three unearned runs in the fifth.
With the game scoreless after four innings, the Mudcats broke the tie against Beck by taking advantage of a mistake. Jerrud Sabourin rolled a grounder towards Joey DeMichele at second base. The infielder's throw to first sailed into the dugout, allowing Sabourin second.
Wendle drove in Sabourin with a single to right, his first RBI of the day. Wendle advanced to second on a fielding error by right fielder Mark Haddow. Following a walk to Jake Lowery, Justin Toole sacrificed the runners into scoring position. Tyler Naquin brought home the second run of the frame on a ground ball to second. Francisco Lindor laced a backside double into the left field corner for a 3-0 lead.
Carolina added a run in the sixth when Wendle hit a sacrifice fly to right that scored Anthony Gallas.
The Mudcats welcome the Wilmington Blue Rocks to Five County Stadium for the first of three games Monday night at 7:15 p.m. Right-hander Will Roberts will throws against Blue Rocks right-hander Angel Baez. Tickets can be purchased by calling (919) 269-2287 or visiting carolinamudcats.com.
