Knoxville Smokies News Release
Zebulon, NC.- James Shanks singled to right field to score Frank Moore with one out in the ninth inning as Carolina snuck by Tennessee 3-2 Friday night at Five County Stadium.
Twice Tennessee leads were erased by clutch Carolina hitting. The Smokies led 1-0 in the sixth after Jarred Ball doubled and scored on a wild pitch. Carolina answered when J.C. Muniz doubled and scored on a two-bagger by Rex Rundgren.
The Smokies went ahead 2-1 in the seventh when Jamie D'Antona doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Marland Williams sacrifice fly.
But again, Carolina came back. Muniz was at it again, tying the game at two with a solo homer in the eighth against Mike Schultz. Daigle (7-2) took over in the ninth and got Rundgren to ground out before Moore doubled high off the wall in right field.
Jerrod Fuell (4-2) retired the Smokies in order in the ninth for the win.
The second game of the series is Saturday night at 7:15 with RHP Enrique Gonzalez (9-7, 4.02) starting for Tennessee against LHP Adam Bostick (2-1, 3.13).
