Mudcats Blank Suns on Tuesday

Zebulon, N.C. - Travis Wood scattered four hits over six scoreless innings while two relievers helped complete a four-hit shutout as the Carolina Mudcats (38-33, 1-1) took a 7-0 victory over the Jacksonville Suns (36-36, 1-1) in front of 6,323 Tuesday ni ght at Five County Stadium.

Wood (8-3) allowed four hits with two walks and three strikeouts over six scoreless innings in the winning decision, dropping his league-best ERA to 1.27. Wood has eight wins and three outings since his last loss, which came against Tennessee on April 26. Suns starter Willie Glen (1-7) fell in the loss, giving up four runs on nine hits with two walks and four strikeouts over four innings of work.

Carolina opened the scoring on the first pitch from Glen when Sean Henry belted a leadoff homerun in the first inning for a 1-0 lead. The Mudcats added to the lead with two runs in the third inning, a groundout RBI from Todd Frazier and Zack Cozart single for another RBI and a 3-0 score. Chris Denove led off the fourth inning with a first pitch homerun, extending the Mudcats lead to 4-0.

The Mudcats were held down in the fifth and sixth inning as Suns reliever Garrett Parcell allowed only one walk with four strikeouts.

Carolina extended the lead again in the seventh inning. After a Frazier single and Cozart walk, Logan Parker doubled home both for a 6-0 lead. Later in the inning Chris Denove drove in Parker with a groundout for a 7-0 score.
