Carolina Mudcats News Release
ZEBULON, N.C. - Jesus Chirinos homered, Luke Adams went 3-for-3 with two steals, Jace Avina had a two-run double and Nate Peterson, Tyler Wehrle and Jeison Pena combined on a four-hit shutout as the Carolina Mudcats defeated the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers 6-0 in Tuesday's series opener at Five County Stadium.
The Mudcats (9-9, 42-39) got things going early with a Jose Sibrian RBI double in the first and Chirinos' home run in the second while jumping out to an early 2-0 lead on the visiting Cannon Ballers (10-9, 45-39). Chirinos' home run was his first with the Mudcats and third overall this season.
Carolina's 2-0 lead quickly ran up to 6-0 in the fourth when Hedbert Perez, Avina and Adams each had run-scoring hits while combining to drive in four more. Adams went 3-for-3 with a walk, a run, one RBI and two stolen bases in the game for the Mudcats. Avina went 2-for-3 with his two-run double in the fourth and a single in the sixth. Perez went 1-for-2 with a double, but left after scoring a run in the fourth with an apparent leg injury.
Kannapolis starter Shane Murphy allowed all six Carolina runs while taking the loss. Murphy (L, 3-4) worked into the fourth, but left after allowing Adams' RBI single to short. In all, Murphy gave up six runs on eight hits while taking the loss.
Peterson started for Carolina and retired nine straight before allowing a couple of walks and two hits in the fourth. Wehrle (W, 6-4) took over for Peterson with two outs in the fourth, and was able to escape a bases loaded jam by getting a flyout to end the frame. Wehrle went on to work through the eighth and finished with three walks and three strikeouts to earn the win. Pena then worked a three-up and three-down ninth to finish the game.
The Mudcats took a 1-0 series lead with the Tuesday night victory. The series will continue Wednesday morning with Summer Splash Day beginning at 11:00 a.m. at Five County Stadium. Two-way player Quinton Low will start for the Mudcats in Wednesday's morning game.
