Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
BOSSIER CITY, LA - The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs started off the 2008-09 Central Hockey League season in style on Friday night with a 5-1 victory over the rival Texas Brahmas. The Bugs scored four powerplay goals and Ken Carroll was solid in net to earn the victory.
Kevin Cooper had three points, Brett Smith and Simon Mangos each had a pair of assists and Joe Blaznek scored his first goal as a Mudbug during Bossier-Shreveport's season-opening victory.
Dale Lupul started the scoring in the first with a powerplay goal before Tyler Skworchinski's marker on the man-advantage tied the game at one after one.
The Bugs exploded in the second period of the game with powerplay goals from Cooper and Blaznek and an even strength tally by Chris Brassard.
In the third period of play, newcomer Neil Clark, who was just signed and activated by the Mudbugs on Friday afternoon, dropped the gloves and was impressive in winning a fight against the Brahmas' Greg McConnell. Another tough guy, Neil Poulsen, capped off the win with his first career professional goal on a late powerplay to provide the final 5-1 margin.
Carroll stopped 37 of 38 shots to earn the win in goal, while Texas goaltender David Cacciola was chased from the net after giving up the game's first three goals. Brett Jaegar allowed two more after coming in to relieve Cacciola.
The Mudbugs special teams were impressive, scoring on 4 of 7 powerplay opportunities and killing off 6 of 7 Brahmas powerplay chances.
The Mudbugs won't have long to enjoy Friday night's big season-opening win though. They'll be on the road on Saturday night to battle another rival, the Laredo Bucks at 7:30 pm. The game can be heard live on the radio on AM 710 KEEL with pregame coverage starting at 7:10 pm and can be viewed live online through the CHL Network.
