
Scorpions Win Opening Night

[RIO RANCHO, N.M.] - The Scorpions started the 2008-09 season out on the right foot with a 6-3 stomping of the Gorillas. It was only the third time in franchise history the Scorpions opened a season on home ice.
The power play started the Scorpions season on a high note. Rookie Torren Delforte picked up a rebound goal to light the lamp for the first time in his career.
One minute later, Sam Bowles won a draw back to Jamie Herrington. Herrington shot the puck towards the net and goaltender Sebastian Jonsson had trouble handling as the puck ended up in the net.
Nine minutes into the second period the fans were treated to the most exciting part of hockey, a penalty shot. Mitch Stephens converted the first penalty shot of his career, giving the Scorps a 3-0 lead.
The Gorillas got their first tally with a rebound goal. Gordon Bell found a loose puck in front of Scorpions' goalie Andrew Martin and was able shoot it into the net making it 3-1.
The game got tighter in the third period when Bell scored a power play goal 45-seconds in. The Scorpions answered when Stephens grabbed his second goal of the night.
Amarillo quieted the opening night crowd again as Jason Weitzel was credit with his first goal of the season at the 14:22 mark. The Scorpions answered minutes later when Sam Bowles found the puck in the neutral zone, used his speed and converted a breakaway goal. Craig Macdonald finished the scoring with an empty net goal at the 19:27 mark.
The Scorpions will take to the road for the first time this season on Saturday night. It will be a rematch with the Gorillas in Amarillo. Puck drops at 6:05 p.m. and the game can be heard on 610 The Sports Animal as well as seen on the CHL Network free of charge.
The Scorpions return home next Friday and Saturday to host Odessa and Wichita. On October 24th, get to the game early as the first 3,500 fans receive magnet schedule courtesy of Responsible Gaming, Chick-Fil-A, Valpak and Santa Ana Star Casino.
