Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
SOUTHAVEN, MS - The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs opened up their 2008 Central Hockey League preseason with a 3-1 loss to Northeast Division rival Mississippi on Friday night at the DeSoto Civic Center. Three of the four goals scored in the game were on the powerplay, as the teams combined for a total of 30 powerplay chances between them.
Defenseman JR Bria scored Bossier-Shreveport's only goal of the contest and goaltender Ken Carroll stopped 13 of the 14 shots he faced as the Mudbugs rallied later in the game but could not come from behind to win.
The teams traded numerous powerplay opportunities early on, but despite five powerplays for the 'Bugs, neither could cash in on special teams in the first. The scoreless opening period was highlighted by the fisticuffs between Bossier-Shreveport's Mykul Haun and Mississippi's Darrell Stoddard.
Early on in the second frame, the RiverKings capitalized on their fourth powerplay of the game when Stephen Scofield tipped in Taylor Hausted's point blast to put Mississippi on top 1-0. More powerplays ensued and each team had 5-on-3 man advantage time in the middle period, but the score didn't change. Midway through the period, the Mudbugs switched from starting goaltender Ken Carroll to Janne Kurikka, and Mudbugs defenseman JR Bria also dropped the gloves with the RiverKings' Darrell Stoddard. The second period ended with the score 1-0 for Mississippi.
Matt Pierce extended the Kings' lead to 2-0 with an unassisted goal less than three minutes into the third period, but then Bossier-Shreveport finally got on the scoreboard. JJ Martin and Henrik Ivarsson assisted on the powerplay goal by Bria at 8:10 of the third period to cut the deficit in half at 2-1. Five minutes later though, another Mississippi powerplay goal by Mike Tuomi gave the two-goal cushion back to the RiverKings and provided the final margin of 3-1.
The Mudbugs finished the night 1 for 14 on the powerplay, while Mississippi went 1-16. Coming in after Carroll's solid performance to play the second half of the contest, Bossier-Shreveport's Janne Kurikka stopped 10 of the 12 shots he faced. Ross Cherry played the entire game for the RiverKings, making 20 saves on 21 shots.
The same two teams meet again tomorrow night at 7:05 pm at the DeSoto Civic Center in the preseason finale for both. Mudbugs fans can again listen to the live radio broadcast through the web stream of the RiverKings' radio home, AM 560 WHBQ, at www.sports56whbq.com.
The Mudbugs kick off the regular season next Friday night, October 17th at 7:05 pm against the Texas Brahmas at the CenturyTel Center. Individual tickets are on sale through Ticketmaster and season and group ticket packages can be purchased through the Mudbugs office at 318-752-BUGS.
