Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
BOSSIER CITY, LA - Five different players found the back of the net as the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs defeated the Wichita Thunder 5-1 in the finale of "Pink in the Rink" weekend Saturday at the CenturyTel Center. The Mudbugs win the season series 4-1 against the Thunder and improve to 28-17-4 for the year.
The Mudbugs led 3-0 after one period and built the advantage to 5-0 before Wichita broke up Ken Carroll's shutout bid with less than 11 minutes remaining. Jeff Kyrzakos finished with a goal and an assist in the game and Carroll made 22 saves to earn his 12th victory of the year.
The âBugs jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead, opening the scoring just 3:08 in when Mark Johnson threw a shot on net from the blueline that changed direction before sneaking between Scott Campbell's pads. David Rutherford assisted on the goal to extend his CHL-leading point streak to 15 games. Joe Blaznek made it 2-0 midway through the period, breaking into the zone and using the defenseman as a screen before beating Campbell with a quick shot. Chris St. Croix capped off the period for the Mudbugs, one-timing a Travis Clayton pass into the net at 17:28 to extend the lead to 3-0.
Neither team scored in the second period, but the âBugs built on their lead early in the third as Justin Aikins hit Tyrel Lucas with a cross-ice pass before Lucas buried his 14th of the year at 2:34. Jeff Kyrzakos made it 5-0 four minutes later, powering to the front before backhanding a shot off the goaltender and into the net. Tomas Klempa then got Wichita's lone goal at 9:18 on a deflection in front of Carroll.
Scott Campbell stopped 29 shots for Wichita as Bossier-Shreveport skated to a 34-23 shot advantage. The âBugs finished 0 for 3 on the powerplay, while the Thunder were 0 for 6.
The Mudbugs will now travel to Tulsa to finish up this weekend's set of three games in three days against the Oilers at the BOK Center. Opening faceoff is set for 4:05 pm with pregame coverage starting at 3:45 on News Radio 710 AM KEEL. The game will also be shown live online on CHL TV.
