Vermont Mountaineers News Release

The Vermont Mountaineers shut out the Keene Swamp Bats, 5-0 on Sunday night in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL).

Vermont pitchers Rayne Supple (Shelburne, Vt./Wake Forest) and Kevin Kernan (Mahopac, N.Y./Stony Brook) combined to allow just two hits in the contest, while scattering three walks and six strikeouts.

Supple started for the Mountaineers, and allowed no runs on one hit, while walking three and striking out three.

The Mountaineers' offense got going in the first inning when shortstop Mike Osinski (Vestal, N.Y./Longwood), who is slated to start the NECBL All-Star Game for the Northern Division, knocked an RBI single, driving in Joe Tietjen (Waxhaw, N.C./UNC Asheville), who reached on an error two batters earlier.

Vermont then added a pair of runs in the second, to open up it's lead. Slade Heggen (Missoula, Mo./Oregon) got an RBI in the inning with a sacrifice fly that scored Keegan Meyn (Oklahoma City, Okla./Arkansas Little Rock) from third. Second baseman Jeremy Giles (Claremont, Calif./Stony Brook) then ripped an RBI double, driving in Will Morgan (Middletown, N.J./Old Dominion), who singled earlier in the inning.

The Mountaineers got another run in the fourth when Joe Tietjen knocked an RBI double, driving in Heggen.

Vermont's final insurance run came in the bottom of the seventh when Trevor Ezell (Alexander, Ark./Southeast Missouri) came across to score after first baseman Mikael Mogues (New York, N.Y./Seton Hall) reached on an error.

Keene was mostly quiet offensively in the game, though their best scoring chance came in the top of the second when three walks loaded the bases for the Swamp Bats. Catcher Tommy LaCongo (West Falls, N.Y./St. Bonaventure) popped out to end the inning, though, stranding the runners.

Keene's two hits came in the fourth inning when Jordan Howard (Stockbridge, Ga./Lee) singled and then in the eighth when Dom Iero (North Canton, OH/Kent St.) had a base hit.

Kevin Kernan got the win for Vermont after pitching five shutout innings, allowing just one hit. The lefty struck out three and didn't allow a walk.

Starter Zach Hart (Wallingford, CT/Franklin Pierce) suffered the loss for the Swamp Bats after throwing four innings, and allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits. Hart struck out three and walked two.

The Mountaineers will be back in action on Monday night when they'll host the Sanford Mainers. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM at Montpelier Recreation Field. The team will welcome in a pair of former MLB players as special guests at that game. Three-time all-star Jim Kaat, who is a former World Series champion and an Emmy Award winning broadcaster, will be on hand along with former MLB pitcher Rob Delaney, who played for the Mountaineers in 2005. Monday's game can be heard on CBS Sports 1240 AM WSKI or online through The NECBL Broadcast Network.
