Newport Gulls News Release

NEWPORT, R.I. - The Newport Gulls split a two-game weekend series with the Danbury Westerners on Friday and Saturday, evening up the six-game season series at two wins apiece as they jostle four positioning in the NECBL Southern Division.

After dropping a 3-0 contest at Cardines Field on Friday night to Danbury, Newport defeated the Westerners 7-3 last night at Rogers Park in Connecticut. The Gulls have now won five of their last six games, climbing to third place in the South, 2 1/2 games behind first place Ocean State.

Saturday's contest was highlighted by another solid start from Jake Cousins, who pitched six scoreless innings before allowing a three-run homer to David Villar in the seventh. Cousins struck out seven on the night, improving to 2-0 with the win.

He was backed up offensively with a trio of homers from Stephen Scott, Ben Breazeale, and Chris Chatfield, as Newport out-hit Danbury 11-5 in the win. Scott went 4-5 in the contest.

The offense wasn't there for Newport on Friday, however, as the Gulls were out-hit by Danbury 9-3 in the 3-0 lost. Blake Battenfield, making his first start of the year, was outstanding on the mound, pitching five scoreless frames and striking out five. Andrew Summerville would be the tough-luck loser in relief, striking out three in three innings of work, allowing just one earned run on two hits.

But the Gulls never figured out Danbury starting pitcher Nick Gallagher, who walked one and struck out six, allowing just two hits, in seven scoreless innings of work. The recently announced Southern Division All-Star starting pitcher was backed up by two scoreless frames tossed by the Danbury bullpen en route to the victory.

With an off day Sunday, the Gulls host the New Bedford Bay Sox on Monday at Cardines Field at 6:35 p.m. Gates open at 5 p.m. for Clements' Marketplace night; two lucky fans will win $500 gift card to Clements' Marketplace, and the zany antics of the ZOOperstars! will entertain fans throughout the night.

On the road at North Adams on Tuesday, Newport will host the Plymouth Pilgrims for Rhode Island Fraternal Order of Police American Heroes Night on Wednesday. All active and retired police officers, fire fighters, and EMTs will be admitted free as the Rhode Island FOP honors retired Providence Police officer Raymond Pezzullo, who passed away in April at 94.
