Vermont Mountaineers News Release
HARTFORD, Vt.- The Vermont Mountaineers will live to fight another day. The Mountaineers split their double header with the Upper Valley Nighthawks on Tuesday, and the Winnipesaukee Muskrats lost in 12 innings to force a four-way tie for the fourth and final playoff spot in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL).
The winner of the final spot be decided with a four-team mini-tournament that will take place on Wednesday. Vermont is the top-seeded team in the tournament. The Mountaineers will host the Keene Swamp Bats on Wednesday at noon. If they win that game, the Mountaineers will play the winner of the game between the Winnipesaukee Muskrats and Upper Valley Nighthawks, which will also be played at noon but at Upper Valley. All games will be win-or-go-home, and the Championship of the mini-tournament will be held at the field of the highest-seeded team left in the mini-tournament. Because they are the top seeded team, all of Vermont's games tomorrow will be at home.
The mini-tournament seedings are as follows:
1. Vermont Mountaineers 2. Upper Valley Nighthawks 3. Winnipesaukee Muskrats 4. Keene Swamp Bats
The Mountaineers blew out Upper Valley in game one of their doubleheader on Tuesday, 11-4. The Nighthawks then topped Vermont 2-1 in game two to force the tie.
In game two, the Mountaineers got a run in the first inning when Trevor Ezell (Alexander, Ark./Southeast Missouri) walked and then scored on a wild pitch. Vermont's offense went quiet from then on out, though.
Charlie Concannon (West Chester, Pa./St. Josephs) put Upper Valley on the board in the fourth inning with an RBI single. The 'Hawks then scored the winning run in the sixth inning when Joey Denison (Troy, Ala./Troy) scored on a wild pitch.
Nick Jones (Kansas City, Mo./Kansas St.) got the win for Upper Valley after pitching one and two thirds innings, and allowing no runs on just one hit. Chandler Sedat (West Bloomfield, Mich./Indiana) suffered the loss for the Mountaineers. Sedat came in in relief and pitched two innings, allowing one run on one hit.
In the first game of the double header, the Mountaineers scored early and often. Will Morgan (Middletown, N.J./Old Dominion) was Vermont's biggest contributor, as he finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored.
Morgan got the Mountaineers offense started in the game with a two-run single in the first inning. Slade Heggen (Missoula, Mo./Oregon) knocked in another run later in the inning with a sacrifice fly. Mike Osinski (Vestal, N.Y./Longwood) tagged up from third base and scored.
Vermont cracked the game open in the second inning with five more runs. From there, the 'Neers got one more in the third and two more in the fourth.
The Nighthawks got all of their runs in the seventh inning when Mikael Mogues (New York, N.Y./Seton Hall), who is the Mountaineers' everyday first baseman came on to pitch, and got knocked around four runs on four hits. Mogues lasted just one third of an inning.
Rayne Supple (Shelburne, Vt./Wake Forest) got the win for the Mountaineers after going six solid innings, allowing no runs on two hits. Joe Levasseur (Rowley, Mass./St. Anselm) got the loss for the Nighthawks.
The first game on Wednesday will get underway at noon. The game, and any games that may be played after it, can be heard on CBS Sports 1240 AM WSKI or online though The NECBL Broadcast Network.
