SwampBats Playoff Situation for Tomorrow
August 2, 2016 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Keene Swamp Bats News Release
Not in action today, Keene needed the Vermont Mountaineers (19-25) and the Upper Valley Nighthawks (19-25) to split their doubleheader, they did, and they needed the Winnipesaukee Muskrats (19-25) to lose to the Mystic Schooners (29-15), which they did as well.
The Mountaineers defeated the Nighthawks in Game 1 of the doubleheader, 11-4. The Nighthawks then scored two unanswered in Game 2 to win, 2-1. The game of the day and possibly of the season featured the Schooners and the Muskrats. A combined 29 runs were scored on 32 hits and it was Schooners coming out victorious, 16-13 in 12 innings.
So, for the first time in the 22 year history of the NECBL, there is a 4-way tie for the 4th and final playoff spot.
All 4 teams, Swamp Bats, Upper Valley, Vermont, and Winnipesaukee, will be part of a 4-team, single elimination, play-in tiebreaker tomorrow, August 3rd.
The 4 teams are seeded as follows: No. 1 seed - Vermont Mountaineers, No. 2 seed - Upper Valley Nighthawks, No. 3 seed - Winnipesaukee Muskrats, and No. 4 seed - Keene Swamp Bats.
The order of criteria for seeding was based on (in this order), head-to-head record and head-to-head record against first-place teams in the Northern Division. If the team's records were tied after that it went to head-to-head records against second-place, third-place, fourth-place, fifth-place and sixth-place team, as necessary, to determine a winner. In the event all of the foregoing fails to break the tie, it was broken by a coin toss.
Here is the schedule for tomorrow, August 3rd:
No. 4 Keene AT No. 1 Vermont, 12:00 p.m.
No. 3 Winnipesaukee AT No. 2 Upper Valley, 12:00 p.m.
All games will be 7 innings.
The winners of the 12:00 p.m. games will then play the final play-in game 6:30 p.m. The site will be at the field of the highest seeded team remaining after the completion of the 12:00 p.m. games. Since is the Swamp Bats are the lowest seed, if they win their first game up at Recreation Field in Montpelier, VT against the Mountaineer, they cannot host the second play-in game.
The Swamp Bats first game and, if necessary, their second game can heard live on the NECBL Broadcast Network and FM 104.1 and AM 1220 ESPN Keene.
